I just found out someone I slept with last year has HPV. He only just found out himself three months ago, and we hadn't been in contact at all since The Act.

He says as far as he knows I should be in the clear, but he sent me this long, heartfelt letter on Facebook apologizing and urging me to get checked just in case.

Even if you test positive, he may not be the source. Lots of folks have it, but are asymptomatic.

The only question I have is what kind of HPV? I would assume it’s a strain that produces warts as, as far as I know, that’s the only way a man would know he has HPV – there aren’t tests that will show if they have the strains that don’t produce warts but cause cervical cancer. In which case – you’d probably already know if you have it, considering how long ago your contact was you’d likely have gotten warts by now. Sure, there’s a slight risk of it lying dormant for a long time, but you’re probably OK.

I've had too may scares in the last couple of years to keep up the same level of promiscuity I wanted to. I actually am VERY paranoid now because so many people actually never test themselves for any damned thing unless they have acute symptoms.

At least he got his shit tested and is doing the work to keep you informed. That said, as mentioned before, if you come up positive, it might not be him. The important part is getting the free and clear or getting on a road to get free and clear.

HPV is not curable, but overall doesn't usually cause symptoms and estimates are that at least 50% of sexually active adults have it.

I thought about that, and you're probably right. The only way I guy would know was if he was symptomatic, and if he did give me anything there's a high chance I'd be showing something by now.

I went and got checked today anyway though. Rather be safe and find out for sure.

I'm just really glad he did the right thing and let me know there's a chance he transmitted me something. I've known of more than a few people who never disclose their status, even when they really should.
