Cartoon Network Confirms New 'Thundercats' Series For 2011

June 2, 2010

A new ThunderCats animated series will premiere in 2011, Warner Bros Animation has announced.

The update is to air on Cartoon Network and feature anime-style animation.

The original ThunderCats series was broadcast from 1985 to 1990 in syndication. Cartoon Network aired reruns in the late 1990s.

The "21st century reimagining" of the show looks to appeal to newcomers and fans of the original, according to a statement from Warner.

The new take will be "a sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes", it added.

The story will involve lead ThunderCat Lion-O's "ascension to the throne - and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost".

Warner will produce the project in collaboration with Japanese firm Studio4°C.

The only real problem with the rebooted Masters Of The Universe series was that He-Man didn't have the sense of humor like he did in the Filmation original series. Other than that, the rebooted series had better storylines. cool

The rebooted Transformers is a total disgrace. It's not worth discussing at all. disbelief

I think a rebooted Thundercats series can definitely work in the 2010's, providing that the fight scenes are top-notch.

These days, Cartoon Network is only good for Flapjack and Adventure Time

They screwed up for adding Dragonball Z Kai to the lineup, now Nicktoons is doing what CN should've done

I'm not a real big fan of Anime for the most part. I'd rather see it in the style of the Justice League cartoon. I won't knock it until I've seen it though. Hopefully it'll encourage them to show the original cartoon as well.

"anime-style animation"?

Pass.

• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

I have mixed feelings on this. I want to be excited, but so many cartoons reboots try so hard to be "hip" or "edgy" they just fall flat.

Oh God noooo, CN is going to ruin it and give the youth of today reason to boast that Thundercats suck. I know growing up and watching the repeats it was epic. Bet you can't find a kid from that era that never shouted "Thundercats! Ho!!!!"

Have u had ur + today?

Seriously, my pops and I bonded over this cartoon. He's 57, I'm 24, and not a day goes by when we're both in the house screaming "Thunder...thunder....THUNDERCATS, HOOOOOOOO!!!". So it's exciting to a point. If very bad things are to come with it, we've got issues and the fanboys and fangirls will shout to the heavens about it. Hopefully they know this is a big deal and won't mess it up.

I guess I don't mind it. As much as I loved the cartoons back then in hindsight, the animation wasn't all that great, so I guess I wouldn't see anime as a downgrade as long as it was just the art style and it didn't pour over to the action and storytelling.
