Because the book is 100% exactly what the author wrote and movies and plays are interpretations of the author's work. I prefer books to movies.

well, a movie should b judged on its own merit but it can never replace the original book (wich often is, indeed, superior).

Anyweez, my french teacher made me read waaay 2 much french literature, and as a result i'm still avoiding it. French poetry still kicks major ass though (although, unfortunately, i've never really gotten in2 any poetry at all, wich is a shame)

I haven't read it either. By what authority is Victor Hugo (or Shakespeare) vital to my life? Who's to say what need to be read?

I don't know, but you certainly need to read it if you are going to be a literary snob... biggrin

I think that literary snobs get together and decide what must be read in order to be a member of their club and this book just pops up for some reason.

Xactly, there's little 2 no fun in reading those damn books (especially the 700p+ ones by some russian who had nothing better 2 do with his time). I think they get selected at random: mmm, big book, a tad boring and no connection whatsoever with the present: it's a classic!!! and they put it on the list.

I haven't read it either...

But I did sort of steal it. Some kid I don't like got it from the library, and it was due in February. I conveniently kept it in my posession until May, when I unloaded it into Mr. Cox's World Civ room.

I hear that kid had to pay something like $15 for the book. biggrin

Probably. I've only ever seen the movie. I had to watch it in VP Arts.

The musical is a VERY loose interpretation of the book. I don't think Hugo had broadway songsin mind when he wrote the book.

I was a lit major and we had a Shakespeare class we had to take and it was brutal. I have a feeling they aren't going to let you get out of college having only read two Shakespeare plays big grin
