My birthday is Friday...don't know what I'm doing for that.

Best friend just moved out of the state and my hubby is in TX.

The kids and I will do something though! woot!

Kids get out of school this week, so I'll be busy when I get home from work because they're certain to be bouncing off the walls.

No summer band though...oldest wants to take a break as she's been in it since she was a freshman and is heading into her Sr year. eek

We're going to Lake Tahoe for a long weekend in July.

That's about it. Maybe I'll finally hang all the framed pictures and stuff I need to hang.

I definitely want to relax in the sunshine, should we get any.

I'm firmly planted in denial

Lawd have mercy, mercy mercy....those dancers can dance their asses off times 100. The actor was excellent. He basically played "Fela" to the "T". My two sisters (I treated them to the musical) absolutely loved it. I saw it last night, so I'm a bit tired today at work, but it's a good "tired".

They basically told the story of his life pretty well, and the music...good lawd, the horns in that band was off the chain. I didn't get to read the playbill, but will today when I get home.

Actress Loretta Devine was in the audience, sitting two rows in front of me and at the end of the show, she was signing autographs, but there were too many folks waiting, so I didn't wait for one.

I would go back and see it again. Love the music. I bought 2 Fela key chains for my sisters, and the cd soundtrack and a magnet for myself. I always loved Afrobeat music, and when they played "Expensive Sh*t", it was on. That song is one of my favorites of Fela's, but I never knew the meaning behind the song, but once the actor told the story of the song, now I know the story behind it. LOL. I

They were also selling the DVD documentary about Fela's life. A movie is also being made about Fela, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, will be playing Fela. He will make a handsome Fela, and he is a great actor.

I had a great time. I plan on seeing more broadway stuff this year. The weather in NYC for memorial weekend was fantastic, hot and sunny, but beautiful, just like today's weather, and of course Times Square was jammed to the "T". I like the way they have the chairs and tables and other seating in the square now.

[Edited 6/2/10 9:40am]

It WAS off the chain. Those dancers were workin' it, weren't they??? love

You should check out David Mamet's play Race. The acting was really good especially David Allen Grier. Did he get a Tony nom?

Yes, those dancers were seriously off the chain. That play "Race" is on my list, as well as seeing Denzel Washington in "Fences". Plenty to do this summer. My sister saw it two weeks ago, and she said Denzel came out outside after the show to shake hands with theatre goers. She said she was trying to snap a pic, but was so nervous, she couldn't get the camera together in time. Denzel could do that to ya I guess. lol

I also loved Memphis and it looks like it's running neck and neck with Fela in the same categories. That was a great musical too. clapping

Oh and David WAS nominated! woot! He killed that role.

As was Bill T Jones for Fela.

[Edited 6/2/10 10:48am]

You know, I was looking at the billboard with that title name. I have to look into what Memphis is about. I may check that out too.

Tears for fears was one of my favorite groups in the 80s. I must have played a few of their songs on replay. They were too short-lived in the 80s. Well, Janelle Monae is performing at the Roseland in NYC on June 7th w/Erykah Badu. Maybe you could check her out too.

Oh, I have all their albums... right up to the last one from 2004, and the 2 live ones released in 2007 and 2009. I also have both Curt's and Roland's solo projects. biggrin

Thanks for the concert tip. I actually can't go that night, tho.

I am interested in seeing "Fences". We taught that play in American Lit this year. I have to check how much longer it's running...

Swimming as much as possible as long as we don't have crappy Summer weather like last year. No major plans for me.

Why swimming? Are you in training or something?

I just love it. Outdoor swimming is way better than indoor.

Well, some do! The problem is they hardly ever support the right team, because they have absolutely no clue at all.

However, us supporting England and being willing to engage in gay activities suggest we don't really believe in our team either. Oh well... shrug

sigh Usually, they extend a show's run when it's been so successful. But I'm guessing that Denzel and/or Viola must have an upcoming movie to shoot because the initial run was less than 3 months which seems short. When I went in April the show was in previews but I already had tix to 3 shows for 3 days in NYC. pout
