Thanks everyone. I'm loving all of your responses.

I am aprehensive about showing Disney movies, however, as I need to movie to be a bit engaging. Fairy tales, or light comedies isn't really going to help much.

Here's the scenerio:

I'm teaching a bunch of classes to mostly Thai college students who have failed a very critical interview (one one of the professors who gives the interview) that assesses their conversations skills in English.

The class that I am teaching is a conversation class (There's no academic writing or testing--it's ALL talking). And part of the lessons are for them the listen and comprehend what is being spoken---I like to use movies to do this with from time to time, because movies are terrific ways to stay entertained (YOU MUST absolutely entertain Thai students at any age or else you lose them lol ) and it spawns dialogue.

So films like Schinlder's list would actually fit in my "Family Friendly" category because of it's importance. However, it's just very long (I only 2.5 hours for each class session). What I'm NOT interested in is just simple light comedies or animated movies that don't really teach much.

I would be very interested in Mr. Fox because he tends to speak very quickly and use colourful dialogue--stuff that's not easy to understand. Also, there are often British characters in the Mr. Fox series, so the mix of accents would be greatly important.

I really want to show them The Color Purple but there are some scenes (the statutory rape scenes between Glover and the young actress who plays Goldberg's younger self) that I would need to fast forward, lest I end up with some powerful General or Parliamentary member complaining that his daughter is watching sex at school. lol

I think the rape scenes in The Color Purple are more implied than explicit, if I remember correctly Spielberg cuts to the bed stand knocking against the wall rather than actually showing the rape. You could probably just look at his filmography and pick anything as most use little swearing or have few (if any) sex scenes (I can only think of Munich)...

Boy in the Stripped Pajamas could work well. Although there isn't a mix of accents, mostly just Brits.

I would say Dangerous Minds but I think that has a lot of swearing, so maybe the tamer version; Freedom Writers.

Up in the Air has some great 'talky' scenes in it as well, plus it's focuses on employment and interviews.

Rather than use a whole film why not just use a few key scenes from different films? Or even well writen TV shows?

I wouldn't have grouped Lars & The Real Girl as Family Friendly lol Although I guess, sex dolls aside, it is.

Stranger than Fiction

Big Fish

X-Men 2

Mr Magoriums Wonder Emporium

The Imaginarium of Dr Parnasus

Love these two movies!

highfive

Mr Magorium is very under rated IMO. It's quite a serious, sad little movie, with an awesome title smile

I think a lot of people might have misinterpreted what you're looking for here, Dan. hmmm

There's plenty that could work. How about:

Little Miss Sunshine

Edward Scissorhands

Some Like it Hot

The Breakfast Club

Pleasantville

Juno

Ghost World

The Last Unicorn (much less of a children's story than people take it for)

Sherlock Holmes (any would work, but the new one's more fun to watch)

I need a some recommendations on family friendly movies that aren't just about fluffy things having adventures.

I'm talking about movies like (what roodboi introduced to me) Lars & The Real Girl, or "Indian Summer".

Movies with a bit of complexity, but not with nudity or tons of cursing.

Got any recommendations?
