Sex and the City 2

"Sex and the City 2" hits theaters on Thursday and the fans are expected to come in droves. Movitickets.com is reporting that many of the opening night screenings sold out weeks ago and some SATC mavens are even shelling out $70 for tickets. Critics, however, are urging moviegoers to lower their expectations.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gives the movie one star out of four and describes the four main characters as "flyweight bubbleheads living in a world which rarely requires three sentences in a row."

In Mr. Ebert's view, the characters of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte exist only to consume things. And their threads? Ebert contends that "these women spend much of the movie dressed in tacky, vulgar clothing."

Mr. Ebert isn't the only critic who noticed the ugly clothes. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune writes that the four women are "insanely costumed" (not a good thing) and resemble "full-on drag queens."

Other reviewers are similarly unimpressed, not just with the clothes, but with the movie as a whole. Claudia Puig of USA Today calls the femme-fest "tasteless" and "an insult to the memory of the cleverly written show and its celebration of friendship." Even more damning -- Ms. Puig calls the sequel, which takes place largely in the Middle East, an "affront to Muslims."

The New York Post's Kyle Smith leaves little doubt regarding his thoughts with this headline: "Sucks in the city." Rex Reed over at the New York Observer penned a truly poisonous critique, calling the 2-hour-and-25-minute flick a "deadly, brainless exercise in pointless tedium." In Mr. Reed's esteemed opinion, it's "so bad you can't even watch the trailer." A.O. Scott from The New York Times remarks that "you may be shocked at just how much older you feel when the whole thing is over."

Amid all the haters (and there are many), there exist a few brave souls who dare to defend the movie. Stephen Farber of the Hollywood Reporter gives the movie credit for scoring "some choice, politically incorrect laughs." And Brian Lowrey of Variety writes that "there are good sequences sprinkled in, where the movie sparks to life." Alas, for Carrie and company, such praise is rare. Far more common are reviews like Lisa Schwarzbaum's from Entertainment Weekly. She laments a script jammed with "pun after groaner pun." Ms. Schwarzbaum's grade: A decidedly unsexy C-.

I wanted to see the film, but the usual Islamphobia/racism factor killed all the enthusiasm I had.

Fuck it, its not worth getting my blood boiled over, I'll gladly settle with the show instead.

No, but I'll probably go see it just to look at John Corbett and imagine us having sex.

I thought the show was ok - I'd watch it if I caught it on, but I wanted to kill myself about 40 minutes into the first movie.

I was very excited until I saw Rotten Tomatoe's rating of it, which didn't make to even 20%, it got a 15%. Now my excitement is completely deflated. "Prince of Persia" it is, it got a rotten rating too but it's 3Xs better than SATC2's, that's bad, too bad for my money. I understand they spent massive amounts on the fashions maybe that's messing with the critics mind and they are rebelling against such excess.

Andy ain't cryin' cuz he's practically SJP and Matthew's BFF. Did you see her on Watch What Happens eating fried chicken, knockin back cocktails, and dishing on the Housewives of NYC???? I soooo didn't expect that, but it was funny as hell. lol

Yes that's true, even though I did enjoy the first one, they could have cut out the long drawn out Christmas holiday details as well as Miranda pondering whether or not she should take Steve back (when we knew she would at the end anyway) and with Samantha pondering on whether or not to fulfill her sexual appetite or stay loyal to Smith (which we figured she was going to drop him sooner or later...there's no way a woman who loves dick that much was going to stay loyal to just one dick for long).
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
