At the multiplex? Really?

Of course.
Teenagers do it all the time here.

They show each other off.

By 'you' I'm not referring to me or the posters here.

If guys are showing the girlfriends off at the mall, what makes you think they won't do it at the cineplexes attached to the malls?

Movie Tickets Reach the $20 Mark

By LAUREN A. E. SCHUKER

For the first time, a major Hollywood film will hit the $20 threshold at the box office, as movie-theater owners test the public's ability to absorb ever higher ticket prices.

Several theaters will charge $20 per adult ticket to IMAX showings of the animated 3-D family film "Shrek Forever After," the fourth "Shrek" installment from DreamWorks Animation. The theaters include the AMC theater in Manhattan's Kips Bay neighborhood, AMC Loews 34, AMC Loews Lincoln Square and AMC Empire 42nd Street.

The increases weren't officially announced, but were reflected in prices posted Wednesday on movie-ticketing Web sites such as Fandango.com and tracked by BTIG LLC media analyst Richard Greenfield.

"With the state of the economy remaining questionable, we worry pricing is simply moving up too quickly," cautioned Mr. Greenfield in a research blog post, adding that he was especially concerned about how quickly children's ticket prices are increasing. "The danger is scaring consumers away from the movie theaters."

This weekend's price increase come less than eight weeks after theater operators instituted some of the steepest hikes in a decade. Those increases in late March—in some cases of as much as 26%—varied theater to theater and focused on 3-D and IMAX showings of another DreamWorks Animation title, "How to Train Your Dragon." The same AMC theater in Manhattan charged $19.50 for an IMAX showing of "Dragon."

This weekend's increases come less than eight weeks since the theater operators instituted some of the steepest hikes in a decade in late March. Above, "Shrek: Forever After" features the voices of comedian Eddie Murphy for Donkey and Mike Myers for Shrek.

The $20 ticket may prove to be a psychological barrier too steep for some moviegoers to overcome, but the industry appears ready to take the risk, especially in the wake of a string of 3-D blockbusters, from "Avatar" to "Alice in Wonderland." 3-D movies accounted for the vast majority of last year's 10% jump in domestic box-office sales. That figure is likely to climb even higher for 2010.

While box-office revenues are up about 6% this year compared to the same period last year, attendance is slightly down—a reversal from several months of rapid expansion at the box office and a record-breaking year in 2009, when attendance was up more than 5%

20 bucks?

That's the Madonna concert ticket of movie tickets. lol

As a teen I brought hard liquor to the movies and twizzlers... now with my kids I just bring apples, crackers, sammiches, candy, chocolates and sometimes canned sodas.

Why? Because its the American thing to do. hmph! They are lucky I'm too boughie to buy the bootleg!

Normally I take in my bottled water, but that's something I carry everywhere I go.

We have a theater here that has a restaurant right there, with great food. You can order and take in the movie with you.

They also offer full bar service in the balcony area. woot!

yes! in-fact, my son and i just got back from seeing the new Shrek film, and we stopped at safeway on the way and bought 2 bottled sodas, junior mints, and chips. lol saved us a bundle! only cost us $11 for both of us to get into the movie. and less than $8 for the snacks, i could have never done that at the movies.

I only go to the matinee shows now...still $5 apiece. And I have a big breakfast before I go, so as not to be tempted.

The big screen and speakers are awsome...that's the only reason I even go anymore.

Shit, I'm about to drop some cash on some surround sound speakers. I already have a 65 inch TV in my living room. What more do you need?

OMG, I hate concession food most of the time.

I used to work in a movie theatre's concession stand and if you saw what the 'butter' looked like before it was melted you'd vomit. It looks sort of like a large cylinder of earwax. And smells somewhat like unwashed balls.

Anyways, I don't always, but sometimes like if we're dining before the movie and the food takes forever to get to us--we'll sneak that into the theater.

It's a double edged sword. In 1991 (back when I worked a movie theater), it cost about 70 thousand dollars for one film purchase (like Batman). Movie theaters make very little or no money off of the films--they make their bucks off of the concession sales. That's why I get irritated when I see slow or lazy concession workers--because they're just hurting the theater owner's bottom line, especially if it's a indie theater.

But on the flip side, as a consumer, it's VERY expensive to watch a movie. You could easily be out a hundred or more bucks for a medium sized family to go see a movie--and that's kind of sad. I don't blame folks for sneaking food in.

i used to work at the movies too, back years ago, we used to take all the hotdogs that didn't sell, take them out of the bun, put them in a zip lock, then the next day put them back in the bun and try to sell them again...yuck! i hated doing that, but i was directed to.that's why i didn't last at that job long. lol and we would bag up all the left over popcorn, and pour it back into the machine the next day like it had been just popped. neutral

See, I can stand seeing silhouettes and talking through my movie in my living room. lol

I like action/fantasy flicks and the bootleg I have of Avatar sucked so bad I HAD to the theater!

Hell yeah, cinemas are too thief with the prices they charge. Unless nieces and nephews want a hotdog when I take them everything they get to eat is store bought.

I was too hyped when I went to go see it. But someone had brought some McDonalds in there and I think some pizza lol

I've taken burritos in movie theaters. Matter of fact, on senior cut day, some friends of mine stopped by the store before going to see "The Hills Have Eyes" lol

I used to do it all the time. The giant purse used to be a must for buffets too.....a little midnight snack. lol. Nowadays, I don't even eat anything at the movies, but if I'm in the mood I'll sneak a box of candy (mostly gummi bears) in there. I know most people complain about how much the popcorn has gone up, but I rarely get a taste for popcorn, so it doesn't make a difference to me much.

No, but really only because I usually cook and/or eat at home before going to a movie. I don't like to leave home hungry unless I'm going to a place to eat. Which is also what I'll sometimes do before a movie.

Yep, I go to the cinema far too often to always be buying snacks but if I'm hungry before the film I might take in a sandwich or muffin. I try to pick stuff that can be eaten quietly and doesn't smell too much though. I always take a coffee in with me as well. When I was a student my friend's and I would sneak in alcohol too lol

If the cinema sold the sort of things I like I'd buy it there despite the extortionist prices because I read that cinemas rely on the income from food purchases.

Yikes! $20 for a movie? I thought movie theaters were expensive here in Iceland...

I guess the recession has meant that they haven't been able to raise ticket prices as much as they might have done due to inflation and the constantly-rising value of the dollar against our currency.
As it is now, the ticket price is about $8.5 , $11 for 3D, $5 on Tuesdays and about $19 for the VIP screen (meaning all the soda and popcorn you want at one specific theater or at least a coupon for soda and popcorn, and adjustable leather seats biggrin ). But for those who don't buy the VIP treatment or don't want to see the movie shown at that screen, the concession stand prices are ridiculous.
They actually call getting a large Coke, large popcorn and a chocolate bar for $7 an "offer". lol

I should add that there is at least one minus to the movie-going experience here that I suspect isn't very common outside Iceland - intermission in the middle of the movie, designed to get people to buy more soda and popcorn.
