Study: Younger Husbands Shorten Women's Lives

May 14, 2010

Cougars take note: marrying a younger man may shorten your life.

That appears to be the findings of a new study published on Wednesday in the scientific journal Demography. The study says that while it’s been proven men who marry younger women live longer, women who marry younger men actually lower their life expectancy.

The research was conducted by Sven Drefahl from the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Germany.

Mr. Derfahl examined the records of two million Dutch couples and found that a seven- to nine-year age gap between a husband and wife caused a woman’s mortality rate to increase by 20%.

Conversely, men who marry younger women prolong their lives by 11%.

Younger women who married older men also experienced a shortened life expectancy.

Researchers aren’t sure why there is such a big difference in mortality rates between the genders. But Mr. Drefahl theorizes women may die younger due to the stress of their marriages appearing abnormal in society.

“One of the few possible explanations is that couples with younger husbands violate social norms and thus suffer from social sanctions,” he said in a statement. Social stress could lead to a less happy life, increasing illness and ultimately, death, he said.

But all hope is not lost for married couples. The study indicates that married people still live longer than single people. And women in general live two years longer than men.

Well, I believe this study is flawed. Don't other studies say good sex extends your life span? And don't younger men usually want more sex? And I've heard that many older women choose younger men for this very reason...although I can't say for sure. whistling cool

So wouldn't that counteract the stress? Just askin'...shrug wink

My bf is 8 years younger than I am and I am very sure if he was 8 years older than I am we would not have sex as often as we do. But he isn't really young, he is 34, and I don't think he would want more sex if he was 18 hmmm. Anyway if I ever marry him I won't get old I guess shrug.

Really? I'm just as horny for sex at 49 as I was at 29.

34 is considered OLD???? eek

Yeah, up...but you are speaking from a "single" POV. wink They are speaking of relationships and marriage. Would you want as much sex if you were married at this age??? hmmm Maybe if you stay single and have sex with older women you will live longer? And older women who just have sex with younger men but forgo the whole "relationship" thing might live longer too??? shrug nuts lol

nod That' a good question. I have never been with an older man in my life, but I don't think that a 49 year old man has sex as often as a 29 year old when they are both in a relationship .

I haven't either, Martina. One was exactly my age and the others were younger. Up to 10 years so. I may die younger but I'll die with a smile on my face. razz lol

highfive Peter was the oldest and he is 2 1/2 years younger than I am lol.
You know what April: He and me were always joking that we would never get involved again with another partner as old as we are let alone older lol. He told me that all the 30 or 35 year old women he sees would be too old for him while I am kinda ageless and he just didn't see my age because we had been together for so long. Well now my new bf is 8 1/2 years younger than I am and Peter fell in love with a woman who is older than me falloff. So she will die young too lol.
