Bankruptcy is on your record 10 years. I guess I'd rather be out $5K in an accident, than have bankruptcy on my record for a decade.

I got everything in writing from the collection agency. But now they're calling me saying if its not there by tomorrow at noon, (I overnited it) theat i will owe 4000 more dollars.

You have your receipt from the post office with the time stamp and the date you purchased the overnight shipping option... That way you can prove that you did overnight it and it shows what day you bought it...

They've been harrassing me for months. They tell me to quit being a scum bag and pay my bills. They even some how got my x boyfrineds x wifes phone number and were calling her. So the shit online about them isn't kind, but I no complaints of them stealing your money.

If you are trying to get control of your debt, you might want to look into this company: http://www.moneymanagement.org/ They are a nonprofit, and have offices all over the country. Here in NYC, they receive funding from the city; so they can't be that bad. I know someone who has met with them (NYC) and they didn't have to pay upfront, and seemed to be pretty helpful. Or call your city office and see if they can recommend a company to help. I know some towns/cities in PA have orgs that will help.

Whatever you do, DO NOT give your account number, soc. number, personal info. to the collection agency over the phone. You did the right thing by sending them a money order (cashier's checks from your bank are okay too) instead of a personal check, and by getting everything from them in writing.

So they told me to call them to make sure it was paid & get it off my record, and when I called I kept getting sent to another number. They must have given me 10 numbers and finally I called one last number and it was a phone sex line!

That's when I started to get nervous and wonder who I'd sent my money to.

Well, it was paid and I just kind of dropped it, but they gave us the loan, but I still have no idea what happened or who I sent the money to.

I've recently had two bills turned over to collection agencies. This reminded me to check on one of the companies I owed to verify it was legit even though I already gave them some money.

But what I discovered is that when I called customer service for my credit card account and input my account number, I was forwarded to the collection company I've dealt with the past few weeks, and that's pretty good confirmation of their legitimacy to me. So if you haven't already, call customer service for the original account. If you aren't automatically forwarded to collections, ask the representative what agency your account was passed off to.

What did I spend 10 grand on?

Food, hotels, rental car, beds for my kids, clothes for my kids, lawyers fees. yada yada. Maybe a handbag or two and some Chineese takeout....who's to say....
