The Last Shuttle Launch Today - Watch Live

Don't forget at 2 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. Central today on HDNet, the very last shuttle Atlantis (STS-132) liftoff will be televised LIVE. There are still a couple of more shuttle missions between now and the end of the shuttle program. If you've not seen a shuttle launch in HD, find a TV and watch it today. The last one was early in the morning and was glorious and beautiful. Today's will be a daylight launch, so I'm anxious to watch it.

I'll be watching via DIRECTV. I've got the DVR set just in case.

It makes me somewhat sad to see NASA mothball the shuttle vehicle. It's what I've known all my life when it came to space travel. But, I guess maybe the design is behind the times, and in light of the shuttle disasters in the last 25 years, it's time for something new.

It's the most useless vehicle EVER for the cost-to-benefit ratio!!

Seriously, we had to cut back on funding of the International Space station and countless other projects to fund this space taxi which is too damned expensive for other countries to utilize when 'politics' aren't involved.

The russians transport folks to space for a fraction of the cost with each launch of their rockets.

I seriously am NOT a fan of the shuttle. lol


Albeit, I do wish they'd hurry up and get a space plane ready. If designed correctly the operating cost could be a fraction of the shuttle's cost and it could be readied in a fraction of the time (days rather than weeks/months).

I've seen a couple shuttle launches irl. They are incredible.

I was in Orlando, FL for one and could see the lauch perfectly.

Thanks for providing a concrete example. I, for one, would have been willing to live without Velcro if the BILLIONS of dollars wasted on the space program could have been applied to other programs that have more direct impact on peoples' lives (medical research, education, job training, infrastructure, etc.).

PERSONAL ALARM SYSTEM - Pen-sized ultrasonic transmitter used by prison guards, teachers, the elderly, and disabled to call for help is based on space telemetry technology. Pen transmits a silent signal to receiver that will display the exact location of the emergency.

EMERGENCY RESCUE CUTTERS - Lightweight cutters for freeing accident victims from wreckage developed using NASA pyrotechnic technology.

Transportation - NASA Spinoffs

STUDLESS WINTER TIRES - Viking Lander parachute shroud material is adapted and used to manufacture radial tires, increasing the tire material's chainlike molecular structure to five times the strength of steel should increase tread life by 10,000 miles.

BETTER BRAKES - New, high-temperature composite space materials provide for better brake linings. Applications includes trucks, industrial equipment and passenger cars.

TOLLBOOTH PURIFICATION - A laminar airflow technique used in NASA clean rooms for contamination-free assembly of space equipment is used at tollbooths on bridges and turnpikes to decrease the toll collector's inhalation of exhaust fumes.

Just to clarify - this is the last mission for the Atlantis. There are 3-4 more shuttle missions scheduled before the whole thing is slowly retired and we move into new areas.

That's unfortunate thinking, IMO.

Space has many mysteries for us to unfold and learn from and explore.

I strongly urge everyone to GO to a shuttle launch. I think you can still get tickets through the Kennedy Space Center website, but you don't have to be on the grounds of KSC to experience the awesomeness of a launch.

I've been to two and they are the most amazing things I have ever seen. By a factor of at least 100,000.

Thanks for providing a concrete example. I, for one, would have been willing to live without Velcro if the BILLIONS of dollars wasted on the space program could have been applied to other programs that have more direct impact on peoples' lives (medical research, education, job training, infrastructure, etc.).

The space shuttle is completely worthless.

But NASA is very important.

The beef I have with this stupidly funded space taxi is that it's proven itself to be no safer than any other rocket technology and costs about 10 times more to get up into space (and I'm not talking about the 2 billion we took to design and build each one), is how we've had to shuffle resources for more important projects because of it to include the scaled down International Space station.

The amount of funding we've had to pour into it's operations is haenous, considering we've limited serverely funding of projects like advanced propulsions systems (TRUE furthering of our technology) and research & discovery projects.
The Terrestrial Planet finder is having difficulty finding funding at all now, and it is arguable one of the most important projects out there. We've yet to launch any substantial life finding missions to mars, Europa or Enselades(sp?). the ones we have sent were neutered compared to what they could have been capable of doing.

Instead, we've wated BILLIONS on a space taxi that looks cool so we could wave our fingers at the Russians who are laughing to the bank because most international businesses and governments are using their rocket to get their equipment into space.

Shit, once this thing retires, we're actually going to ferry our guys up to the Space station on their rockets for a fraction of how much we dump into our useless space taxi.



THat being said, I agree, NASA is an extremely important mission, and we should actually be funding it more--but we should stop acting like John Wayne with ridiculous projects (Thank god Obama cut funding to the Moon), and get the most important research/discovery missions done first. Hell, we still don't know what space rocks are floating about out there that could knock us the fuck to oblivion lol, nor do we have any technologies that can prevent them.

To me the Space shuttle was like buying an expensive car and delaying a college education for it. It was just stupid. And my dad worked for a company that worked on systems for the damned thing. lol

I rewatched the launch. I knew I was missing something.

This is the last for Atlantis.

Discovery and Endeavor both will fly once again before it's all over. There's still an emergency launch set if needed. But otherwise, Discovery and Endeavor will be the last two. There will still be folks on the space station for the time being. In fact, Atlantis took up a Russian module that will double as sleeping quarters, and is a room for science experiments. They'll also change out six batteries, each being the size of a suitcase and weighing about 400lbs each, and will allow the space station to go on for another 10 years.
