It really depends on who you ask. For young 20 year olds the answer would probably be a near unanimous 'yes'. If you asked Fauxie, the answer would be more complex and nuanced.

Tais are an ethnic group comprising Thais, Cambodians, Loas, etc. It's really 'Siam' and you can blame Americans for the silly spelling--not Thais. Their alphabet is clear and easily phonetic.

I mean, why is 'ea' pronounced differently for 'year', 'pear', and 'sean'? Because it's English!
