Planet of the Apes Prequel: Rise of the Apes

May 2010

Twentieth Century Fox announced today that they will make "Rise of the Apes, a contemporary origin story of the Planet of the Apes saga, for release on June 24, 2011.

The studio will partner with WETA Digital to employ the groundbreaking technologies developed for Avatar, rendering photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors. Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist) will direct from a screenplay by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.

Rise of the Apes is an origin story in the truest sense of the term. Set in present day San Francisco, the film is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

The one thing I hate about modern sci-fi movies is that they appeal deliberately to 14 year old boys. Throw space ships, a few technical theories, and slo-motion boobie bouncing into a few scenes and you have an instant modern day sci-fi.

Sci-fi works best when it works as political or social allegory. Instead of showing us how the apes were genetically manipulated, wouldn't it be far more interesting to see how their religion came to be? How they formed social networks which eventually instigated a slave/master mentality between them and the other humans (not to mention other inferior primates)?

This entire project, given that it's due June 2011 sounds like an absolute must-miss.
