BAN THE BOOZE, PUFF THE POT Society has had over a hundred years to study the effects of booze on the human condition, and I think we can safely say it makes people wacky and violent and drive cars badly. In the spirit of Barack Obama's Change Strategy, I'm saying seriously that the time is now to get rid of alcohol and legalize marijuana. People would be a helluva lot happier. I don't partake of either, but you could lower the prison population, tax the hell out of it to give the government a new source of income, give the farmers a new cash crop to grow, employ security guards to watch over the growing fields, and put people to work! I'm serious!

I live in British Columbia. We have legalized pot up here, for medicinal uses/limited recreational use. It has it's ups and downs.

Yeah. People who smoke pot are real good drivers. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Such as? And what exactly is limited recreational use? " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Such as? And what exactly is limited recreational use? It's not technically legal, but possessing small amounts is no longer a criminal act. If the cops catch you with just a little bit of weed (sorry, I don't know the actual amount allowed) the worst that will happen is they'll confiscate it, no charges laid. I actually was going to comment, but decided not to and accidentally hit the "Post response" button anyway (I was about to fall asleep at the keyboard). But, I tend to agree with you about the two not being comparable. I've ridden with someone who had just smoked (as I had myself) and I believe it makes you much more alert (almost to the point of paranoia) and much more deliberate, whereas alcohol obviously slows your responses.

No doubt about that. I could have sworn we were doing like 80 at the time, but I looked at the speedometer and it read 45!

I don't see it as often as I used to...but high school was a mess I remember. Whether they were smoking pot and driving later or not, it was a fiasco at times, especially when they arrived to class stoned. It was extremely prevalent and it wasn't too funny. A lot of my friends were using, but I was accepting and I never judged. They were still good friends to me and I love'em still. But I personally never indulged. I don't think booze should be prohibited. Prohibition in the 30's led to nothing but gangsters getting rich from bootlegging. But yes, I think pot should be legalized and taxed instead of having a "war on drugs" method of attack like in the States. But I don't approve of using it and then going behind the wheel. That's an example of when someone's personal choice might endanger the lives of others. [Edited 5/4/10 16:54pm]

I dont think that would ever work...it should simply be decriminalized...if they wanna set a legal age limit for use, fine..if they wanna limit where and when it can be used, thats ok too...but trying to control the sale and finding an effective method of taxing it will create new infrastructure issues and basically create a new illegal market... the label 'drug' needs to be removed as well...it's natural...used in a natural state...I can't think of anything else that can be homegrown, used in it's most natural state and then taxed...the idea that marijuana is considered an illegal drug boggles my mind...

[Edited 5/4/10 16:54pm] Not to generalize too much, but if my own high school experiences are anything to go by, teenagers are idiots, and they don't make good examples for the general population. I do agree with you on both points though. IMO Marijuana should be legalized, taxed, and regulated the way alcohol is with similar laws pertaining to it. While I do personally feel slightly safer as a passenger of a driver who's been hitting the pipe than I do as a passenger of a driver who's been hitting the bottle, I think it's a myth that motorists who smoke pot are safer than motorists who drink. They're just dangerous in a different way. Though to be fair, traffic, cars, and driving scare me at the best of times so I'm probably not the best person to consult. I drive stoned all the time. I won't ever consider driving drunk. I'd rather take ten hours to drive two blocks than plough through two stop signs killing either myself or someone else. Weed also eliminates road rage. When someone cuts you off, you just assume that person's been drinking and say "fuck it". You'd never chase the car down and cause a scene (especially if the joints still lit between your fingers).

Not sure I can buy that. Actually, in my experience this is true (I don't drive by the way). I would never get in the car with somebody who's drunk, but stoned, I might have done on a number of occassions.
