The long-anticipated film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" is reportedly expected to hit theaters in December 2012.

The movie will be directed by Guillermo del Toro. Peter Jackson, director of "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, will serve as the executive producer and co-writer.

The film will be split into two parts, the second of which will be released in December 2013. Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Hugo Weaving have been confirmed as cast members for the films.

The release was announced by Warner Bros. as it revealed plans to release up to 20 movies through 2013. Some of the other films expected to be released include "Legends of the Guardian: The Owls of Ga'Hoole," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" and "Happy Feet 2."
