Iron Man 2 - Meh, but no too Meh Just got back from seeing Iron Man 2.
It was pretty good in places but a bit 'rushed' all over. There were several plots and subplots taking place---albeit it was nowhere near as messy as Pirates of The Caribbean 3, it still could have been streamlined a bit. Strong points were....of course... Robert Downy Junior and Mickey Rorke, though I think they should have spent a bit more time on Mickey's character. Comedic moments also abound in this movie, and I found myself giggling at even the most predictable of lines merely due to RDJ's delivery. The action sequences were good, and they did go 'over the top' and try and outdo Transformers or anything like that--but kept it entertaining. There are a few great action sequences in the movie of course, but the movie did not rely on them. Overall it was better than the likes of Spider-man 3, but suffered from some of it's messiness. I still give it a thumbs up.

I think more comic book movies should go that route. All the best ones so far have been as good as they were because they didn't try too hard to reach a general audience or spend a lot of time explaining things. There's a balance that has to be struck obviously, because a film's success can't rely on geekery alone, but the quality of the film is generally better if they just charge ahead and tell the story. The key, I think, is respecting the source material. A lot of people still don't take comics and graphic novels seriously and that's their prerogative. But when moviemakers don't take the source material seriously we end up with Spiderman 3 and Batman & Robin. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I really am starting to have the opinion that audiences should only need to have their hands held for the first film in comic book film series. After that, overly detailed origins for characters from the books are really not all that necessary. In this day and age if a non-geek person really liked the first Iron Man film, they more than likely would have at the VERY least read up on him at a site like Wikipedia, so they'd have some clue who everyone is supposed to be. As long as the filmmakers stick to the books and don't try shit like un-Deadpooling Deadpool Facebook, I haz it - https://www.facebook.com/Nikster1969

For the record, I also think comic book movies should go the Star trek route with their science and hire actual physicists and whatnot during the scriptwriting process to ensure as much as possibile is actual plausible. 100% on the money. When you have writers & directors who respect comics, you get a masterpiece like 'The Dark Knight'. There's so much great source material - why fuck with it? I'm really looking forward to Branaugh's version of Thor. [Edited 5/3/10 7:07am]

I kind of resent that I'm going to have to see Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, and what? -- Ant Man to get the plot ties to see the movie I'm really interested in, namely The Avengers. Seems like Thor in particular is going to suck with bad stories coming out that the actors are dissing eachother's work.

I wholeheartedly agree with this post. Let's take turns taking advantage of Mr. Downey, hey? I've a feeling, married or no, he wouldn't complain too much about either of us. There are so many dynamic stories and narratives in modern comics that I can't understand how anyone trying to source a script out of them couldn't see the potential for serious storytelling. Comics, some have argued, are the modern parables and legends of our time. Superheroes are really just Hercules and Achilles in tights, when you get right down to it. What for? It's science FICTION. Unless it was based on a true story, all movies are fiction. If other genres like War movies and chick flicks have fact checkers, why not sci fi? Besides, a lot of sci fi geeks are also geeks about real-life science and if the technology in a movie is too fantastical they'll end up picking apart the physics instead of just enjoying the film. Fact checking on Star Trek is a form of fan service. [Edited 5/4/10 10:12am] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Iron Man 2 Leaked Online May 4, 2010 Pirated copies of Iron Man 2 have leaked online four days before the much-anticipated sequel hits cinemas in the U.S. Studio bosses at Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment opted to release the movie outside America before the film's domestic release on Friday, and they were rewarded with ticket sales of more than $100 million at the international box office last weekend. But the quick release has given pirates the opportunity to copy the movie and leak it. According to reports, camcorder-shot copies of the movie are available for download on a string of torrent sites online.

I just saw Iron Man 2 today, and while it was quite entertaining and definitely worth seeing just for the popcorn fun effect, it wasn't quite as good as the first movie. Nevertheless, it had some genuinely funny moments, and Robert Downey Jr. once again made the movie. He made an otherwise by-the-book action movie truly magical the first time out, and he kept this movie from turning into a bloated crap fest like Transformers 2. Mickey Rourke was okay, but he wasn't given much to do in this movie. His character could have been a more menacing villain if they had developed him more.
But it looks as though they're already setting up the Marvel spinoffs. They mentioned the Avengers midway through the movie and had Samuel L. Jackson in a cameo role playing Nick Fury, and in one scene Tony Stark needs to prop up one of his scientific gadgets, and he asks someone to bring him an artifact that looks like Captain America's shield. And if you stay through the end of the credits, they show something landing in the middle of the desert that also seems to reference either Captain America or Thor.

But Thais like to go see movies in the cinema even if they buy the pirated bootlegs. Very few THais own home theater systems. And I'm one of those folks who finds watching movies at home a bit depressing--so even when I get in the position to own a home over here with a pimpass t.v. I don't think I'll ever not go the cinemas. But yeah--it's all over the place here already.
