I want to talk about JACKFRUIT

At first blush, Jackfruit looks alot like Durian (Turian), the king of fruit in Asia. However, Durian has sweeter, nuttier flavor, but also a smell that can only be described as equal parts citrus, sewage, and ass. Jackfruit lacks this smell, and even smells mildy pleasing.

The flesh of the jackfruit is a golden buttery color, has a slightly leathery texture, and has a delightful crunch when you bight into it.

Jackfruit has been shown to lower blood pressure and relieve symptoms of asthma. There are numerous health benefits to eating jackfruit. It is also jam packed with potassium and that can't be a bad thing, can it?

The wood of the jackfruit tree is used for making musical instruments, popular in Malaysia and other south east Asian countries. The fibres of the wood can also be woven into material and used (like below in these monk's robes, made from Jackfruit fiber).

Just in case you're wonder what the fruit looks like, see below (this is much larger than a mango or even a papaya. Those things can be likened a huge set of balls, but jackfruit would be larger than a double-D breast).

The flesh that you eat looks like this:

This shit is delicious yall.

Damn, the timing of this thread is kinda weird. I went to the supermarket next to my house a couple hours ago which has a lot of Asian foods you wouldn't find in the average grocery store. My daughter saw some Durian and was asking what it was. Never saw it before and was quite perplexed myself like WTF is that, it looks like a Blowfish fucked a watermelon and had babies. One fruit bin over was Jackfruit, looking similar like you said. I was wondering what kind of dishes you might prepare with it and all since it was the weirdest looking food I've seen in some time.

It doesn't have a really strong flavour. It doesn't taste 'exotic' or unusual, it's just quite sweet (though not juicy, it's very much solid, not watery inside). It actually feels kinda plasticky on the outside but has a real nice crunch to it. It's nice. smile

Take 'em when nobody's looking. I do that with the mangoes on the trees next door either side of us, just lean out the window and nab them. lol

Jackfruit is yummy! I used to go to a little Vietnamese restaurant not far from where I grew up and we always ordered jackfruit as the dessert. I haven't eaten it in years, but if I remember correctly, it kinda tasted like pear, mango, and banana all rolled into one.

This is so embarassing; I am 48 years old and this is the first time I have ever heard of either if these fruits. Had I not come across this thread who knows how long it would have been...never???

haven't heard of those either; they are very interesting looking on the inside, pretty actually. Can you eat them, or just drink the juice? Are they sweet aswell? They look like they would be related to the coconut and quite crunchy. foodnow

Actually the texture isn't too far from fresh coconut flesh, though the flavor is nothing like it.

The only way I can describe it is somewhere between a pineapple, mango, and peach, but very mild. It's quite a dry feeling fruit--not much juice in it. But addictive once you get into it.

I love jackfruit. redface
