TV's Mr. Spock beams in to Vulcan - Alberta, somewhere he's never been before

After 44 years, a few generations of TV shows and multiple movies, Mr. Spock is finally making the trek home to Vulcan. Leonard Nimoy, who has played the character since "Star Trek" debuted in 1966, is set to beam in to the tiny Alberta town this afternoon. (THE ASSOCIATED PRESS/Reed Saxon/ file)

VULCAN, Alta. - Mr. Spock has returned to Vulcan. Sort of.

Leonard Nimoy, the actor who became a pop-culture superstar with his portrayal of the iconic science officer in the "Star Trek" TV series, was welcomed by throngs of fans in Vulcan, Alta., today. Nimoy, who is 79, was taken on a tour of the town's "Star Trek" visitors centre and was to marshal a parade and get the keys to the town.

Vulcan is the fictitious home world of the Spock character.

The real town of Vulcan south of Calgary, named 100 years ago for the Roman god of fire, has transformed itself into a pilgrimage site for fans of the show.

Nimoy says, while he's honoured to be in Vulcan, he's hung up his pointy ears for good.

I live in Calgary, and it's amazing what the tiny town of Vulcan has managed to do with its namesake. It was even the site of the North American movie premier of last year's Star Trek Reboot.

Here's some pics of their attractions (keep in mind, this is just a small town)...

It was really nice to see the original Mr. Spock in the new Star Trek movie. I take it he won't be appearing in the sequel based on his remark about "hanging up the pointy ears." Still, it must be nice to have a loyal fan following until the day you die! lol
