At Least 19 Dead in Mexico Earthquake

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - At least 19 people were killed as houses collapsed in a powerful earthquake (news - web sites) that rocked central Mexico, the governor of the Pacific state of Colima told Televisa television news on Tuesday night.



"There is extensive damage to homes, mostly in the (state) capital, there are many houses damaged," Gov. Fernando Moreno said by telephone.


He listed numbers of dead in different cities and towns in the small, agricultural state about 310 miles west of Mexico City. The total added up to 19.


The earthquake was at least 7.6 in magnitude, big enough to cause substantial damage.
