Ridley Scott reveals 'Alien' prequel details

Scott reveals 'Alien' prequel storyline
Friday, April 23 2010, 12:24 BST

By Simon Reynolds, Movies Editor

Ridley Scott has confirmed that his new Alien film will involve Space Jockey extraterrestrials.

The director, who also revealed that he has a fourth draft script for the prequel, told MTV that the action takes place decades before Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley boards the Nostromo spacecraft.

He said: "It's set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney. It's fundamentally about going out to find out, 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?' The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle - there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer's chair.

"Our man [Tom Skerritt's Captain Dallas] climbs up and says, 'There's been an explosion in his chest from the inside out - what was that?' I'm explaining who the space jockeys were."

Scott added that the colonial corporation Weyland-Yutani has yet to be formed and the sci-fi movie will deal with "terraforming - taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life".

When asked if Weaver will be involved in any capacity, Scott replied: "It will be before she was born! But the main character will be a woman.

woot!

Fingers crossed this will kick ass. The original director (whom i'm a big fan of) back in control of the franchise. Can't wait.

This is intriguing news. By "Space Jockey" should I assume they mean the depiction from old Mayan reliefs?

He's gotta say something to distract people from the reviews for Gladiator2 Robin Hood.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

I've not read any yet, i'm going to see it with an open mind. Scott is usually a safe bet.

I love A L I E N

But Scott better not fuck it up. Without other creative forces like Walter Hill, Giger, Ron Cobb, Dan O' Bannon, Jerry Goldsmith

Scott has sometimes made some things that were severely lacking in many areas: Legend, Someone to Watch Over Me...

He has to have a good team. And a good story. How can you beat the story of ALIEN?

I have a feeling "Robin Hood" is his next "Kingdom of Heaven", a butt-nasty theatrical release with a pretty good director's cut to follow.

Ahh... I'm wrong. The Space Jockey was the name of the host species they found in the very first movie.

...Might be cool if they worked in the Mayan reference, though. Of course, if they do now, I'll sue. mad

It's not a remake of the first one but I've heard two different takes on this:

1) It takes place after the first one with Arnold Schwarzenegger (a classic IMO)

or

2) It takes place in the far future after that last aliens vs. predator requiem garbage where the government got a hold of the predators weaponry.

I thought the plot of Predators was that they take the deadliest humans from earth and basically put them in a game preserve for the ultimate hunt.

I'm almost positive that's the plot.
I still play pokemon. I play warcraft. And I'm awesome.

I hate, with an absolutely passion, the blending of the Predator and Alien franchises, and think it works best when they are separate.

Yeah but how do the humans get there and who gives them weapons? Who established this game preserve? This film has got to fill in the gaps between the first two Predator films lest it get panned by the critics and the die hard fans.

To me, the predator franchise requires a huge amount of suspension of disbelief for the mere fact that this race of creatures is so advanced yet so barbaric.

I mean, the've got these hugely advanced, glimmering cities, are able to traverse the universe in spaceships at will with almost no travel time (evidenced in AVP-2), and yet they like blood sport? It just makes the entire thing seem hokie to begin with so I just ignore it and enjoy the action sequences. lol

I expect The alien franchise to be a bit more, though A4 really fucked up lol

Your first paragraph brings to mind either an episode of Star Trek or Star Trek Generations in which one of those captains said something to the effect that the more advanced the brain then the more need for stimulus and games. The Predator for all their advancement still need to be mentally (and I guess physically) stimulated so they find pleasure in hunting humans and other advanced species. Advanced in the sense that the species have created a civilization and a means to engage in warfare. In P2, there is a scene in which Danny Glover is on the Predator ship and he comes across a trophy case. In the case is an alien skull, a human skull, what appears to be a cro magnon skull, and if I'm not mistaken....the skull of what could be jar jar binx from Star Wars. lol

if Ridley is directing this, it will be decent and interesting, that's for sure...

but I'm not sure if the whole Space Jockey thing deserves a movie of its own... confused

I get and agree with the intelligence quotient needing to be matched by entertainment---orcas at seaworld demand a tone of attention compared to, say, sharks. nod

It's just that to build that kind of technology, to indeed develop astounding technologies to traverse the space between solar systems would entail much more than intelligence. It would require cooperation and law--else, they'd blow themselves up before progressing---something humans may end up doing. lol

I just can't see how an advanced race which has been able to cooperate enough to develop these amazing technologies would not have some law and order, specifically around a moral code... but then again, I'm thinking like a blue state liberal human being. lol

Yes you are blue state liberal up the ying yang. hug

hmmm Well the Predators did have a moral code. They didn't appear to kill the unborn. Remember that Maria Conchita so and so in P2 was preggers and the Predator let her live? Although he did drop her like she was hot and that could have resulted in miscarriage. shrug

To hades with all this moral code law and order crap....I wanna see some Predators fuckin'. That shit might be off the chain!

Big ass, muscular, dreadlocked, mandibble lookin' mofos. I bet they got big ole peens.

Ridley Scott Planning Two 3-D 'Alien' Prequels

Could Start in Early 2011

06/15/2010
Space Jockey

Director Ridley Scott who helmed the first Alien movie, is planning to shoot two prequel films to the influential science fiction epic. Scott plans to shoot the films in 3-D and hopes to begin production on the first film in early 2011. He told Geoff Boucher of the L.A. Times’ Hero Complex blog, that the script for the first film “is written, I’m prepping it now.”

The Alien prequel will be set 30 years before the action in the first film. The prequel will provide the backstory for the huge statue, dubbed “the Space Jockey,” that the crew of the Nostromo came across in the initial Alien movie. Scott explained to Boucher: “we're going to go back [and ask]: 'Who the hell is the space jockey?' "

If the first prequel is successful, Scott, who also directed the influential science fiction film Blade Runner, believes that the story that he has come up with has the potential to spawn its own sequel: "What we're going to try to do is squeeze in two prequels. . . if you explain who he was and where did he come from. . . then you may want to find out where they came from, you might want to go to him and go to the place where his people come from."
