Bill Cosby is responsible for Eddie Murphy being less edgy. He talked him into toning down his act. Bill Cosby is Eddie Murphy's Larry Graham, lol.

Do we need to make a list of old comedians who didn't fall off the edge like Eddie?

"I'm so embarrassed to have done stupid kids movies for more than a decade in a blatant attempt to get America to forget about that "lady" I tried to, um, give a ride home. I'm hoping a director will give me a chance on a real role in a real movie... because I still have the juice and I got a bunch of mouths to feed... I'm just as funny as Charlie. I just need a shot... Please?" I don't think he was trying to make them forget so much as he realized it would be kind of absurd to pull the same anti-gay rants in his comedy routines as before or to portray himself as an alpha-male hetero lady's man. As far as losing his edge or street cred, it actually happened a bit before the tranny episode though. He lost his street cred right here: These two queens should have fucked each other while they had the chance. .....What the fuck did I just watch???!! ..... [Edited 4/28/10 17:44pm]

imo Eddie lost his edge when he did the norbit movie. also in the movie the klumps where he played the non-made up character, he became the poster boy for playing a true "buffoon." Live life as though each moment is as precious & beautiful as a rainbow after a spring rain. b positive, creative, kind, productive, resourceful & respectful of humankind, & feel free 2 know that U-R-A . i can feel it when u shine on me

You mean he lost his edge with "Harlem Nights". After that film, he couldn't buy a hit. I also think his tries at a music career also fucked things up.

Besides, does anybody want to hear a 51 year old man crack jokes about boogers, gays, gold diggin' girlfriends and how short everybody in hollywood is?
Eddie is 49. Plus you know he won't be talking about that shit he used to talk about, the edgiest thing he can do is talk about the hypocritical nature of Hollywood, aging, being a single dad and all that stuff. He could talk about entertainment and politics too but I doubt he'll be as edgy when it comes to the entertainers anymore. [Edited 4/28/10 12:08pm] Now if he'd talk about that then I'd be all ears. Somehow...I think Robin and DL would do a better job. Not that those topics are edgy to begin with, but it would seem more sincere coming from them.

The last films where his star power made it popular was the sequels to the "Nutty Professor" and even then it was only a brief return.

Bowfinger was the best out of the one's that you mentioned I loved Bowfinger, but wasn't that a Steve Martin film? The humor was very much something Martin would do. I was forced to watch Norbit because my nephews (7 and 8 years old at the time) loved the film. I couldn't believe that it was given a green light for filming. I mean, I was seriously shocked, it was just that bad.

Did you see Conan O'Brien wearing a purple jumpsuit just like Eddie did in the 80s? It looked hilarious on him.

Eddie was obviously in a different place during the "Delirious" & "Raw" years, and his lifestyle inspired a lot of his material. If he kept on that path all these years later, folks wouldn't appreciate his earlier works like they do now. People easily forget that he was doing that stuff night-after-night. I think he pushed the envelope as far as it could go, and every other comedian that came after him was following his trail. btw "Street cred" is bullshit lol.
