I don't think he was trying to make them forget so much as he realized it would be kind of absurd to pull the same anti-gay rants in his comedy routines as before or to portray himself as an alpha-male hetero lady's man.

Eddie's just maturing (...like the rest of us, lol). In many ways it reminds me of Jerry Lewis. When he first came out? OMG! He was all over the place, definitely considered edgy in his day.
