Eddie Murphy: “I’ve Lost My Edge"

“I’ve lost a lot of my cool and edge, I think… I don’t know. I think my cool and edge are gone… You know, I think I’m onto some other place. Whatever my edge or cool was back then, I’m onto some other area. I don’t know what it is… You know, I’m thinking about getting into stand-up, to see what comes up!”

http://feedproxy.google.c..._edge.html

Looking at the bright side, he's openly reflective about it and hopefully he'll figure out a way to reinvent himself.

Eddie's still great at playing characters, and can be pretty funny, but I think he lost his edge about 20 years ago--at least!

As long as we got DVDs of Delirious, Raw, Beverly Hills Cop 1 & 2, Coming To America, Boomerang...

Do you guys like Golden Child and Harlem Nights? If I have seen them, it's been too long because I forget.

I saw Coming To America at a drive-in theatre! eek

There it is. Best Eddie can do to feel alive again is to have a 14-year-old boy blow crack up his arse with a straw.

He showed promise in Dreamgirls. Maybe its me, but I think he could pull it off given the right movie.

Being funny and being edgy aren't the same thing.

This is actually heartening. I was beginning to wonder if he noticed.

I hope he does get back into stand-up. He did really well in Dreamgirls, but that's been the only interesting work he's done in years.

The problem started when he wanted to do movies that his kids could see. A comedian of his grade should have known better. He should have just stuck to stand up or movies like 48 hours, or do what Chris Rock did. While Chris did do a movie that his kids could see, it was a cartoon. Eddie doing these not funny, full length movies, is what killed his career.

I could handle it when he got caught with the trannie hookers but I drew the line when he got that guy from the Spice Girls pregnant.

I think having an edge comes from being uncomfortable, and that's why these guys lose it. Doing stand-up is hard, and being a movie star is probably a much better job.

I see it with Seinfeld these days when he does standup. It's pleasant, but he doesn't seem like a hard edged comedian, he seems like a huge star telling some jokes.

I disagree. When people like Eddie and Seinfeld are doing comedy, this is when they are the most comfortable. Why, because this will always be their first love. Doing 48hrs is not much of a stretch for Eddie, because it was like he was doing comedy rotine and, plus he was not carrying the entire movie as is now. Therefor, he would be more comfortable. It is when he has to carry a movie and try to be an actor, is when the problem starts. He not only has to be funny, but he might also have to show other emotions that a comedian usually does not show. The only person that I feel has been successful at it has been Will Smith.Although not a stand up comedian, per say, Will has mastered the art of being funny on TV and then taking that to the big screen.

I agree that's when they were at their best, but I think that's because of the challenge of being in front of live drunk hecklers. It keeps them on their toes.

Maybe Eddie can't pull off acting as well as Will Smith, but I guarantee every scene Eddie does, a bunch of people say "Great take, Eddie, that's hilarious!" And that makes it hard to truly develop your craft when the feedback is not as honest as a club audience.

He just needs to get back to his roots. Put him in front of an audience with nothing but a microphone and tight ass leather suit...ok maybe not the leather suit, I haven't seen what his body is looking like lately giggle but I'm sure that ol' Eddie Murphy "edge" will come right back for him.
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

You're not supposed to be edgy when you are a grown ass man and more importantly a father. That being said, sucking off trannies is quite edgy, so maybe he aint lost it after all.

MrGravyLumps

Did you see him on David Letterman show? He joked and laughed when he talked briefly about that Pluto Nash film and how his kids are brutally honest when they see him in his films. He's certainly done alright in all Shrek movies recently and he looks he's in a good shape for a 49-year old too.

I get the feeling he would do alright if he went on the road doing stand-up and impressions, in a more mature way than earlier. Trying to do Richard Pryor all over again though would be just waste of time, he's already done that and so many have tried and failed since then.

That's what fucks things up for a lot of actors IMO. There's nothing wrong with doing the odd family-friendly flick, but when every part is something chosen by the actor so their grade-school kid could see it things start to fall apart. Hate to say it, but it's happened/is happening to Johnny Depp these past few years.

Correction:

An edgy parent is cool. A lame parent trying to be edgy is not. There's a difference.

Ummmm...all parents are lame as far as their children are concerned. What's particularly lame is people who've bred thinking they will ever be edgy again.
