I can't see it in Canada. mad

I'm guessing, though, that I'm likely the polar opposite of the guys in Mad Men... and I'd like to keep it that way. lol

I can't hear a damn thing...but if this is a course on the fellas from "Mad Men" then sign me up. Those dudes are hawt!!! Why don't men wear suits and hats anymore? Comb their hair? Smell nice and fresh? Seems like the only time a man takes dellicate care in his appearance is when he's going on a first date or a job interview...which are kind of the same thing. confused shrug

OK, I've seen the clip now. My thoughts: This sort of thing is likely driven by American men (and I use the word "men" loosely here) who aren't sure of themselves, who are threatened by women who've had the audacity to become outwardly strong and other men who've had the audacity to become inwardly strong sans the ridiculous macho theatrics, and who need a fraternity of like-minded wusses to play cowboys and Indians with them.

I love being a male. L.O.V.E. it! I love that I have the biological luxury of being rough around the edges, assertive, occasionally aggressive, sometimes even physically imposing (though I'm a total dove). I love that I have to shave, that I retain the prerogative to chug a beer and drop a stray swear word and not look like an utter primitive, that I kick up an earthy smell after I've been physically working hard, that I don't have to feign a certain sentimentality when something is less than moving to me.

All that said, I've arrived at that sort of appreciation pretty much by myself ...and it has decidedly nothing to do with the sort of philandering, corporate-slaving, yearning-for-a-golden-age-that-never-was kind of "manly" nostalgia we see pandered in this clip. I thank God for that option, because I ALSO love that I can dress my butt off when I want to (yeah, I said it cool ), that I can emote when something does move me, that I can hug -- really hug -- or even kiss another male and not feel all freaked out, that I can outdecorate my chic French neighbor, that I can outaccessorize and outcatwalk my wife talk to the hand and fix a toilet, scare off some thugs and put.it.on.her pimp2 when she needs it. Oh... and I LOVE that I can keep up in a chat about kitties, Judy Bloom and who the cute actor du jour is with my daughter while I advise her on what glitter nail color will best match her outfit! rainbow

...Anyway, my brand of masculinity is certainly not for everyone, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. And I know for a fact that a whole lotta people's lives have been blessed by the unconventional man God made me to be.

Embracing Manliness? What does that mean?

From that clip I've made a couple of observations: I see someone at least tried to throw a token black man into the mix. Using AMC series Mad Men as the backdrop, if we are going to be historically accurate, a brotha back in the day would have been lucky if he'd swept the floors of that building those white men worked in.. at best he would've had a shoe shine box in the lobby. Number two, not all men in this world are free and men use physical and physiological abuse to "feminize" and humiliate other men.

I sure didn't see black, brown nor yellow in that clip, save from the token. I think some people are having a hard time accepting "Their Way Of Life" is disappearing. Oh, well. shrug

I was going to say. People did not smell "nice and fresh" in the 60s. They smelled like cigarette smoke, Brylcreem and four-day-old AquaNet. disbelief

What do you think "ring around the collar" was all about?

falloff I thought it was about sweat...like nervous sweat or something. What's brylcreem? That sounds nasty.

But seriously I thought men may have smelled better in those days because their clothes were always laundered and they took 20 minute baths rather than 5 minute showers. hmmm Oh well....at least they looked clean judging by all those old movies and mags. I can't fathom Sidney Poitier or Henry Fonda stinking in the middle of the day for no good damn reason.

I don't always wear suits and never hats or comb my hair like that, but I always have to smell heavenly and know that I have taken care of every inch of my body before I leave the door. So it may be the same style, but not the exact same appearance.

Brylcreem was a men's hair product that was sold with the slogan, "A little dab'll do ya."

Clothes weren't laundered any more often in the 60s than they are now. And folks might've taken a longer bath - but they didn't take as many of them!

What they were (rather than clean) was more formal. People dressed for everything. shrug

There is definitely truth in the old adage, "Clothes make the man." shrug
