well really...if i'm a dick because i won't tip somebody for squirting soap in my hand, when i could do it myself, then fine. furthermore, i could really believe that you would apply for such a job and not get hired. lol

I would never apply for such a job to begin with, mainly because I know I'd have to encounter people who behave like you. No thank you.

People in the service industry are dependent on tips. Yes, even the bathroom attendants. ESPECIALLY the bathroom attendants.

Is it right that employers can get away with paying their staff so little they pretty much have to beg for handouts from customers so they can pay their bills? Hell no, it isn't. But that's the way it is. If you don't like it, instead of being a snide dick about it, how about you look into ways to change the system? Speak to business owners, write your local politicians, whatever.

Do something useful with your energy instead of looking down on people who really do depend on their tips to get by.

No, I called you a dick because you're in here practically bragging about dick behaviour. It's hard not to see someone who laughs at a service employee instead of tipping them as anything but a dick.

You think you don't have to tip someone? You don't. You also don't need to come online every few weeks and piss and moan about it either. If you don't like how the service industry works either see if you can't do something about it or leave well enough alone.

I can see both side of the debate or situation.

There's a thin line between tipping for services rendered(good service) and nickel-and-diming people. We talk out both sides of our mouths in U.S., no other country more than ours stand by the motto, nothings is for free. My late father wasn't a tipper he didn't believe in it and being a union man his thoughts were, if you weren't getting a honest day's pay for a honest day's work than organize and fight for yours. I can't say I don't agree.

However, I do tip: many people don't practice basic hygiene nor have manners, I shudder to imagine what those bathrooms would look like if those attendants weren't there. I have no issue tipping at restaurants or if I have a a running tab. Flipping a cap off a bottle of beer? Please. I don't believe people should stay at home if they for whatever reason can't afford or don't tip. The flip side, just think if people didn't go to bars nor restaurants people/workers would be unemployed.

I am annoyed with bathroom attendants, because they actually make the experience more uncomfortable. Why should I pay for something I wish did not exist?

At least bartenders are somewhat helpful, nice, and often pretty. And you pay to be out in the company of others, not to have a bottlecap removed.

I don't know any Brits that tip just for the sake of tipping (unless you're on a date or business meals/drinks). I'm not against tipping but I onlu do so if the service is good, if it's just average or bad I won't tip. I've worked as a waitress and I didn't expect a tip unless I made an extra effort because that was my job! Why should people get a tip for doing exactly what they are being paid to do?

I never know how to tip if the service is crappy but the food is great (or vice versa) though

I agree I prefer the British way of doing tips, I wont tip someone unless the service or whatever has been good. Also if it is someone inparticular who was helpful I will give the tip directly to them explaining its for them alone not to be put into a tip jar to ba shared out. My sister is allergic to certain substances so it really is nice to have a helpful waiter/waitress and I dont feel they should share the tip I give them for that help with others who have not done anything inparticular.

If you want to tip the chef or kitchen its normally easiest to do it via the front of house manager.

You're paying her for the convenience of not having to wait at the bar a thousands years to get a drink. Also, for when you want a mixed drink from the bar, you don't have a line of people buying easy pop off bottles.

You get at least 10 minutes of time of your night back. Easily worth a buck a bottle.

I like this comment, it's informative and lets Fury understand why they even set it up that way, without calling the guy a rude asshole/dick. I think we can argue with one another without name calling which usually leads to people turning a deaf ear anyway. Just saying...

i tip generously, 20% as often as i can.

that being said, i've seen tip jars at deli counters, where no real 'service' is offered other than the basic, we sell food, you buy food at our counter.

i do see a lot of tip jars that are places where they ought not be. opportunisitc tip jars, that is.

What really ended my willingness to buy a damn thing at starbucks was when I found out that there were managers who were also getting a cut in the tips, now that's crazy.

If someone owns the business, should they get tipped? Like if they own a hairsalon should they get tipped too? I never go to the owner so I don't deal with it.

lol Lord.

She's right. As I said in my previous post. Look, either add the cost to the food or pay your workers a decent, just wage. That was my father's point and that's why he refuse and didn't tip. People shouldn't have to be put in a postion to pay for a meal and then pay a restaurant workers wages. Still unless the party is over 6, 7 or more the 15 to 20% gratuity that the Cheese Cake include in the bill isn't mandatory; if the service has been bad you aren't obligated to pay.

disbelief

she. is. wrong.

$8 tip for a $164 + bill in an upscale restaurant? talk to the hand please. that's wrong.

i mean, it's not even an issue of bad service she's ranting about there, it was just her and her friends not feeling like leaving a tip at a restaurant where the prices were kind of high.

fact is, tipping is how it's done, disagree or not, she knows the score.
she needs to stick with McD's and taco bell.

No she's not. I think she said they left what they had. That's the way it is? The 8 hour workday, overtime pay, family leave (I could go on) weren't given they were fought for. When you put up with mess, you are messed over.

Yeah, that automatic add tip to bill shit they're pulling now pisses me off. disbelief I mean, I don't mind tipping but let me decide how much extra of my money you deserve.

My fam and I went out to BBQ's the other week and the girl that took our orders was nice and a bit helpful BUT she didn't even bring our food out, someone else did and they automatically added a $25 tip to our bill for her. I'm like, I can she if we gave her the run around and shit but all we did was order our food and asked for the check when we were done and all she did was take our orders and give us the check, NOTHING EXTRA! Shit, we ordered hotwings and asked her for blue cheese, the heffa waited till there was literally 1 hotwing left on the plate to come over and ask if we still wanted blue cheese whofarted BITCH, DO YOU SEE THE ONE WING SITTING ON THIS PLATE?! We tip her $25 for that. neutral lol

I worked as a "barhop" back in my younger years. One of the things that we all hated to do was to work the bucket of beer. We knew people didn't want to tip for that. We made less than minimum wage and a part of our salary was considered to be our tips. Bars, restaurants, anywhere where the tip is considered to be a part of your salary, the company has to make sure that you earn minimum wage so that if what you earn in tips plus what you are paid hourly doesn't equate to minimum wage, then the company would have to pay you extra on your paycheck to ensure you've made minimum. If that keeps happening, they'll soon fire you because they don't want to have to pay extra.

Starbucks and Subway are not places I feel I need to tip. boxed They're making my sammich which is no different than the poor dude sweatin his ass off flippin burgers at McD's. I only tipped at a Quizno's once, because a friend of ours was such a pain in the ass to the poor dude makin her sammich. Bitch, it's Quizno's how you gonna sit there askin bout the quality of the tuna?? Or bitchin that they gave you more lettuce than you wanted. STFU and eat it. neutral
