Really?

I LOVED Dogma. Found it totally hilarious and thoroughly enjoyable. The cast was stellar!

Ben and Matt were awesome as the angels, Chris Rock was bitingly funny as the Lost Disciple, and George Carlin? Are you kidding me? Carlin was PRICELESS.

Also, Salma Hayek is a stripper. drool

And Alan Whatshisface as the Voice of God? Fantastic.

George Carlin is in the FILM? eek Its a DONE DEAL.

Honestly, I didn't remember George Carlin being in the movie...

Maybe a 6 was harsh. I'll bump it up to a 7. smile

I so want to like Kevin Smith films, I read his writing and he really seems interesting. Then I watch the films (clerks, Mall rats, jay and silent) and they just suck. The dialog just falls so flat

yeah, as does the low budget. It's easier to forgive kinda crappy acting & directing when it looks like it was made for cheap. lol I like the movie a lot though.

Did you see the alternate ending? They definitely picked the right one! eek

Did he explain the reason for making the original ending? He always told the story of WHY he changed it, but I don't think I ever heard him say why he came up with it in the 1st place.

I agree though, he def made the right decision.

sometimes writers want to give depth to the piece by shoehorning in a really overly dramatic ending. i've done it before.

Genius, genius, genius. My favorite director of all time, own every single movie he's made on DVD (except Cop Out which I don't think has been released on DVD yet), have a massive 'Dogma' poster on my living room wall, have a signed copy of his first book, a regular copy of the 2nd, and literally an hour before seeing this thread sat down and started reading the latest one 'Shootin' the shit with Kevin Smit' which I believe is mostly or completely transcripts of his Smodcasts, and he's replied to a few things I've asked him on Twitter, which makes me happy smile

Simply put - I'm a fan.

I was probably 16 when I saw 'Clerks' and damn if that wasn't the best case of totally inspired filmmaking on a small budget I've ever seen - with some fucking legendary dialogue and hilarious scenes to boot.

My all time favorite scene from Clerks has to be....

MY LOVE FOR YOU IS LIKE A TRUCK - BERSERKERRRRR
WOULD YOU LIKE SOME MAKING FUCK - BERSERKERRRRR

"Did he just say, making fuck?"

lol lol lol lol lol

I don't think I've ever disliked a Kevin Smith movie. Hell I even like Jersey Girl.

I like that his material is so polarizing. I don't think I've ever met anyone who just "likes" Kevin Smith. You either love him and totally get his style of writing and directing or you just don't get it at all.

I literally spit when she said that falloff

There IS something endearing about his films, I can't put my hands on it though(maybe because I'm a newbie fan). So many times I hear the term "crude comedy" getting used to describe his films and Judd Apatow's, but I think its way more than that,,,,for both.

Here's a ?uestion though; do you think the movie is sexist? hmmm

A girlfriend of mine says she hated Clerks because of the sexist overtones. Do you guys agree?

Maybe I enjoyed the movie too much to let a detail like that slip away.

his films also get accused of being a bit homophobic.

i don't think the film (or films) are necessarily sexist or homophobic so much as lot of kevin's characters tend to be overgrown 13 year old boys existing in adult bodies. i think you are meant to laugh at their immaturity instead of seeing it as a good thing. his trifecta of leads are typically a real asisine man-child best friend, the way more mature and intelligent girl, and the guy on the fence between the two, in love with her and wanting to be mature and adult, but held back by the man-child friend. clerks does it, chasing amy really deals with a lot, as does clerks 2, and zach and miri.

and in the end his smartest characters tend to be the women and the gay characters (particularly becky in clerks 2 and hooper in chasing), who exude intelligence and maturity in a way the straight guy bufoon characters never get close to.

i think for all the immature jokes along the way, overall the films do end up siding with the maturity aspect, and embracing it, and are very reverential towards women.

Sometimes when offensive humor is not dealt out in an even manner, it can feel like that.

From what I remember, it is from a male perspective... all those male characters, even the comic foils are male.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I wouldn't consider myself a HUGE fan, but after years of watching his movies, occasionally reading his blog and seeing a few of his "an evening with" dvds I think he's very gay positive and, like you say, reverential towards women. The way a man talks about and treats his wife/partner is always a good indicator, and he passes with flying colors in that arena.

The jokes are in teasing good fun.

I just re-watched that scene in reply #46. That's a perfect example of taking existing sexist attitudes and literally questions them through a character.
