Holy Crap 500,000+ iPads sold / UPDATE: Apple stock hits an all time high I'll be completely honest--I'm still struggling to figure out what I'd use it for. I mean, it's not a computer per say--it won't run photoshop or Dreamweaver. But, then again, I don't really picture most folks wanting all that power in something that small. However, it isn't that small either. Apple has decided that their tablet offering would be a big gaget rather than a small computer , and of course as the years go by, computing power will increase. But I'm struggling to figure what people would use it for other than surfing the Internet. I mean, it's much too big to fit in a pocket, so it's much less portable than an iPhone or iPod Touch. But it obviously will play movies on a brilliant looking screen which you can take with you, while giving you 'tablet' computing functionality. Either way, there are a few things that prevent me from jumping at the chance to own one: 1) Firstly, for fuck's sake Steve---support flash!! 2) Secondly, Why is there no front-side camera? No front side camera = no teleconferencing or video chat. --- That would have made this device really high on the fun factor for some folks. Either way, initial sales shows that for belonging to a niche market, the iPad has already started off on a phenomenal footing. I, however, will refrain from buying a first gen iPad, and probably be savoring whatever the upcoming iPod touch has to offer. . [Edited 4/15/10 3:08am]

I bought one. It's replacing a MacBook as my travel machine. I absolutely love it! I had originally ordered the 3G version, but I went to Best Buy on launch day to play with it and decided I didn't need 3G. As someone who didn't play a lot of games on my iPhone, this may be the ultimate gaming platform. I plan to use it to read books, surf the web, check out photos, and watch movies. Netflix streaming to the iPad is phenomenal!
It's obviously not perfect as a 1.0 version, but it definitely works well already and has a great deal of potential. AFAIC, to hold one is to love it. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Nice looking, but it seems a bit redundant -- and considerably less practical than the gadgets it'd be duplicating -- to me. [Edited 4/8/10 6:26am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

For someone like me who doesn't watch videos on these devices, but would like to surf the web for casual surfing, and also for address book, email, and note taking, would your recommend an iPad or iPod Touch?

Are you against video? I can see why you wouldn't watch it on an iPod Touch, but it's glorious on an iPad. Anyway, I would definitely recommend an iPad over the Touch for the things you mentioned. Seriously though, you should definitely go to an Apple Store or Best Buy and try it out. It's hard to convey just how well it works unless you experience it for yourself. I haven't done any word processing yet, but it's fine for inputing text on a web page. The text box you're typing in moves to the top of the window when the keyboard slides up. Ahh.. like the Touch, then. Also, what protects the screen when the iPad is not in use? It seems so big and vulnerable to me. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I'm betting the bulk of those sales are to retail outlets.

http://labs.chitika.com/ipad/ no. It's unique hits from individual iPad machines to that website above (one of the tallys). Minus the 'on display' machines at retail outlets, that's a huge number, especially for a niche product in it's first week of sales. I thought this thing was going to be a sales dud honestly, because like I mentioned above, I'm still trying to figure out what most folks would use it for . But the sales are real and nowhere near as dismal as Sony mp3 products.

I would definitely suggest a case for it. Apple says you don't need a screen protector, but I'd rather be on the safe side. I haven't removed the plastic covering yet until I can get one. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

It'll be interesting to see how the design pans out. Perhaps is won't be an issue at all. In the meantime, though, I'm glad you're enjoying it. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
