Thailand Pt1 -- A PICTORIAL

This is the first part of a self indulgent walk through a few experiences that are relatively mundane within my life. Essentially, I’m allowing you (my extended Internet friends) to sample some of what I come into contact with every day here in Bangkok.

This is some random road, I forget what it's called. It's not important right now. Major roads are called “Thanon” or if pronounced by the cookie monster, “Thanomnomnom”. All kinds of people fill the crowded streets, looking for bites to eat, shopping for clothes in the many small markets, or just loitering to provide a sense of familiar clutter to reassure Bangkokians that everything is fine. Barriers are often used to try to control peoples' movements so that they don't get too excited or free-thinking:

PICTURE 1: http://temptationthailand...=333&h=500

It is not unusual to see women in Thailand carrying what I like to call "purses". It’s just something that is convenient for them to put shit in, like lipstick, contact lenses, mobile phones, sticker photos, and chopsticks, napkins and condiment packets taken from restaurants. PICTURE 2 shows a couple of these "purses" women like to use:

PICTURE 2: http://img.photobucket.co...purses.jpg
PICTURE 2b: (a bigger 'purse' I've decided to call a 'handbag') http://img.photobucket.co...981/1s.jpg

As you may know, Bangkok has a large number of stray dogs. However, due to chronic neglect many of the dogs seen on the streets are not actually strays but instead are owned dogs that have decided to look for a better life. The following picture shows a girl giving out leaflets to passers-by in an attempt to locate her lost brown dog, last seen in a phone booth near Ramkhamhaeng:

PICTURE 3: http://img.photobucket.co...981/2s.jpg

One of the problems that I’m faced with OFTEN when I walk around Bangkok is navigating its maze of large busy roads and small lanes (called "soi" in Thai). It's very easy even for experienced Bangkokians to lose their way in unfamiliar parts of the city, but fortunately signs are plentiful should you take a wrong turn:

PICTURE 4: http://img.photobucket.co...981/3s.jpg

Life is very hectic in Bangkok, not least due to the traffic problems and sheer number of people on the streets, so time is at a premium. As such, it's normal to see Thai people eating or drinking on the run, buying from small street stalls and mobile vendors:

PICTURE 5: http://img.photobucket.co...981/4s.jpg
PICTURE 5b: http://img.photobucket.co...981/5s.jpg

When not being entertained by eating or drinking something though, moving about in the city can be a wearisome, monotonous experience, being funneled by barriers in the same direction alongside so many other people, constantly chastened by advertising hoardings and TV screens to be whiter, slimmer and more wealthy. The youngsters have taken to escaping into their own world using devices I've coined "iPods".

PICTURE 6: http://img.photobucket.co...981/6s.jpg

Note: This girl is carrying one of the aforementioned "handbags". This doubtless contains a 'doggybag' from Sizzler, the primary reason for these larger variations of the "purse".

As well as "iPod" devices, Thais use a similar small device I believe may be called a "phone" (though I'm not 100% sure). As you may know, the monarchy in Thailand is held in high esteem and almost universally loved and respected by the Thai people. Certain colours have assumed great importance for Thai people, often inspired by the king's favourite colours and choices of apparel. Thai people can regularly be seen checking these small devices to see what colour the king is wearing that day so that after work or study they can go home and change into the appropriate coloured clothing:

PICTURE 7: http://img.photobucket.co...981/7s.jpg
PICTURE 7b: http://img.photobucket.co...981/8s.jpg

Thais not only greatly respect the monarchy but also their religion. Thailand is predominantly Buddhist. After just a short amount of time here you will notice that Thai people wear distinctive pendants around their necks. These are called "praa" pendants. Here is a girl modeling one of these for her friends, probably on a forum for sharing ideas and thoughts on Buddhism:

PICTURE 8: http://img.photobucket.co...981/9s.jpg

Thais are not all about serious stuff though. They're a very fun-loving people. After long days navigating the busy streets of Bangkok many Thais look forward to watching television, usually slapstick comedies or soap operas. However, they are very superstitious and deeply spiritual and even during downtime at home will often perform various Buddhist rituals.

PICTURE 9: http://img.photobucket.co...81/10s.jpg

Note: This girl is not really appropriately dressed, having not changed into that day's colour, but no doubt she is planning to change right after she finishes her prayer.

Lastly, I know this forum likes to keep things light-hearted and fun, and I don't want to be viewed as a square or anything, so here's a pic of something you might also occasionally see around Bangkok, a girl in her university uniform:

PICTURE 10: http://img.photobucket.co...81/11s.jpg

Anyways, thanks for viewing my pictorial.

Barring her being a ladyboy I would totally encourage her to sit on my face.
