ironic that apple can't give me what jailbreaking can

Technically not an app. When you sign in to your acct. via iPhone, it asks you if you want to put a shortcut on your desktop.

at what point do you sign into your account? You mean from a web browser? Or when you first set up the phone?

The sony is android but its running it with v1.6 instead of the newer version (2.1 i think)
I have an ipod touch and thats pretty cool.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

The iPhone must be cheaper in the US and Canada, because where I live the CHEAPEST model is sold for 1130 US$! No way I would pay that kind of money for a mobile phone - even if it has other capabilities.

I love my iPhone.
Being able to get all of my email accounts right on my phone is awesome.
Being able to buy music directly off of iTunes = awesome.

Some of my fave apps...
Shazam
Facebook
Tweetie
Foursquare
Yelp
TFLN - Texts From Last Night
Hopstop

I also have a US Postal Service app where I can track packages i get on a regular basis which is also kinda cool.

Oh, and for those whining about having to ditch your 3G if you want 4.0. Stop.
I have a 3G as well. It's a processor issue, plain and simple. You've milked the 3G as far as it can go. Get over it. You've either lived without being able to multi-task for this long and you can continue to do that, OR you'll do like me and buy a newer version that will be out this summer with more memory and all the bells and whistles probably for the price you would've paid for your 3G when it was brand new. boo hoo. Apple doesn't "owe you" multitasking. Good lord.

Of course apple doesn't owe me multitasking, but why in the world would I ditch a perfectly functional phone and pay for multitasking when I can get it for free by jailbreaking the phone (in addition to gaining other features which you won't be able to get when you pay for OS 4.0)?

"processor issue" = planned obsolescence

And while I am at it, fuck Apple and their DRM controlled universe down at the iStore politburo telling me what software I can and cannot put on MY phone. Open source is the future and the sooner you stop sucking Steve Jobs cancer ridden dick, the better off we all will be.

Whoa! You must be on some prison colony in outer space!! lol

In Canada and the United States, an iPhone 3GS is roughly $99US for the 8gig model, $199 for the 16gig model and $299 for the 32gig model if you sign a 2- or 3-year contract (depending where you go) with a wireless carrier.

I bought mine for $399 from a private owner, but I'm free of any long-term wireless contracts. I don't use the iPhone terribly much as it turns out, so I find it more cost-effective to do pay-as-you-go minutes.

i'm going to attempt to go high road (which is part of my year long Org resolution).

first of all, who's telling you to ditch your perfectly functional 3G? um, no one? you act as if your 3G won't function at all after 4.0 is released.

secondly, "planned obsolescence"? the original 3G is what, damn near FOUR YEARS OLD NOW? any other electronics that are four years old that get phased out for newer models/upgrades/faster processors? like, ALL OF THEM? you have a four year old computer that isn't as fast and can't run the same software as a newer model are you whining as much about that too?

Actually I was wrong about one thing - the price I mentioned is for the 16 GB 3GS model. I know that part of the reason for the high price is that Apple hasn't officially selected any operator in Iceland for some reason.
The phones that are sold in Iceland are not bound to a contract and they are not locked to a single operator as in most countries, because I think Icelandic law doesn't allow phone operators to lock their phones to their own network - or at least they all stopped doing that a few years ago.
The reason why Apple doesn't have Iceland listed on their iPhone support list is maybe because they don't have a special iTunes store here. neutral
The VAT rate is also very high here (25,5%).
Anyway, if I needed to buy a new phone, I'd probably go for a LG Viewty.
I can get it for $230 here and it comes with $8 worth of calls and texting each month for 12 months (96$ total).

it is less than two years old. do you even know what you are talking about?

besides, I am not whining about a function that the 3G is not technologically capable of. It can multitask right now, if Apple would let it do so. Hell, the reason Apple is allowing multitasking in OS 4.0 is precisely because the jailbreak community already hacked the iphone to do it. In otherwords, it is the jailbreaking community that is driving the innovation, not Apple.

Now please, answer my original question, why would apple deny the users of a phone that is less than two years old the ability to take advantage of the new operating system? There are millions of 3G in the wild. Apple is begging a great number of those users to jailbreak and forgoe spending money in the iStore. It makes no business sense unless Apple thinks that all its users are sheep who will buy a new phone every 1.8 years just because Apple finally tells them it is ok to use their phone to its full potential.

The Viewty seems like a decent deal.

If you really wanted an iPhone, though, you could buy it from outside of Iceland, get it unlocked, and just stick in a SIM card from the carrier of your choice, right? And it'd save you a ton of money, it seems... although I guess it'd still suck that you'd have no access to the iTunes store for new apps, etc. confused

from Wikipedia:
Release date Original: June 29, 2007[2]
3G: July 11, 2008[3]
3GS: June 19, 2009[4]

So I was counting from the original, big whoop. You get my point.
TV's, Computers, gaming systems, etc. ALL change quickly from year to year. Especially cellphones. Show me ANY phone that's relatively unchanged for two years that's worth a damn.

I totally get your point, but it has nothing to do with my point. If the 3G was incapable of multitasking, I wouldn't be complaining. But it is capable of multitasking and was multitasking long before Apple's announcement of a new operating system.
