Can any of you Americans enlighten me on

1. What type of snack are these
2. Are they any good

I ask as there have been ads on here (New Zealand), saying they are going to be released soon and that they are "Americas best kept secret"

I'm not American but I think I can answer this..
But seriously, are Doritos snacks just NOW coming to New Zealand? We've had those for at least 15 years in Iceland and we used to be kind of behind when it came to fast food and snacks.
To answer your questions:
1. It's flavoured tortilla chips. The most typical flavours are Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch (or Cool American as it's known here).
2. It used to be my favourite snack. I rarely eat Doritos these days but I recommend trying them with their salsa dips.

I've been eating Dortios for pretty much all of my 4 decades.
They are probably more American than apple pie and baseball put together. They're quite delicious for a simple cheezed-up spicy chip.

They are good but I am off them FOREVER thanks to one little incident.

horrible things. they taste synthetic, theyll shed your mouth to ribbons. if they're warmed they go all soggy, not quite a crisp or chip..
i hate all that spicy shit they wallop all over them, crapamole etc

They're not terribly spicy (there's a little spice to them, nothing overwhelming) but you are right about them being good. Spicy Nacho flavor is probably spicier.
