I'm pretty sure it's social awkwardness due to homeschooling.

Definitely something that can be diagnosed. I have to deal with these kinds of kids frequently as my wife is a teacher (I help in her classroom and on field trips when I can) and I coach a lot of intramural sports.

Kudos to the kid for winning, and also to the broadcaster for doing the best she could!

I thought he was cute too. boxed

He's adorable. A bit obnoxious, and definitely needs social conditioning else he turn into some really socially awkward adult.
But, still kind of cute.

Homeschooling doesn't do this to a kid. I'd also bet money that kid is on the autism spectrum... which is perhaps why his parents chose to home school him.

Kudos to him.

Yes, homeschooling CAN do this to a kid. I used to babysit a home schooled kid that was just like this...zero social skills at all. I've known other children that were home schooled that were similar in terms of lacking social skills.

It's not always some form of autism and autism does not always show itself as being devoid of social skills.

I have to agree with this. Homeschooling removes a tremendous amount of opportunities to socialize and that is EXTREMELY difficult for the child. He can't possibly learn social skills when surrounded by only 1 or 2 adults (and maybe siblings) who cater his every need or only communicate with him in one form or another. He needs to be exposed to lots and lots of people.

Hell even pets need to be socialized lest they turn into barking, yipping messes.

While I'd imagine homeschooling can do something like this to a kid given the right mix of other variables, my guess is the sort of thing we see in this video is overwhelmingly not the norm and not necessarily a function of homeschooling in itself. It's not like these kids are locked up in a cage with zero human contact beyond mom and dad. All the homeschooled kids I know, for example, engage to varying degrees with extended family, playmates, folk in their neighborhoods, fellow church members, other participants in any number of extracurricular outlets, etc. And while, IMO, they tend to be more shy, a bit less competent in navigating peer conflicts and possibly a bit more "spoiled" (though we'll find no two people who can agree on what that even means), I've not seen them act like the kid in the above video... except for the two who have been diagnosed with Asperger's. shrug That said, I agree not all kids on the autism spectrum behave quite like the boy in this video. But some degree of social difficulty is not a "sometime-y" thing with autistic children, as I understand it. It is a defining characteristic. And that awkwardness coupled with the pointed focus in spelling and as seen particularly in his hand gestures, his facial expressions, his aversion of the eye, and his speech and conversation patterns seems to say something. I'm not a pro at this, though. smile I hope I haven't offended anyone.

I'd have thought aspergers, as well. I also agree that, often parents choose to homeschool when a child is having social difficulties and such.

Well look whom I found dipping their toe in the murky waters! :eyeroll: At least offer me a damn cup of coffee!
