Mmmm grilled cheese and tomato soup What makes something a chowder? Because it has fish in it or because of the consistency? I know you can have fish soup. Maybe it is a combination of those things.

Thankyou everyone. Thanks for the recipe 9s. A clam is an edible mollusc.

Where does clam chowder originate from? Is it an American dish?

Or is it that it is a New England thing maybe? I looked it up in an online dictionary and it said a soup made with seafood and thick in consistency, but I think you're right abot the potatoes, LaV.

Yes Lleena, I think so, although the word "chowder" is French in origin. Look what I got from Google! http://www.aboutri.com/Ho...howder.htm Chowder is not a Soup
Chowder is considered to be a true American food, having become popular with the very earliest settlers to New England, using ingredients that were convenient to them. They generally preferred to make it with cod and related fish species, but clams or quahogs were plentiful all along the coast, and were an important staple during those first winters. The origins of chowder can likely be traced back to several similar concoctions from various parts of Europe, using both freshwater and saltwater fish, usually made by the fishermen right along the shore or the riverbanks. But New England chowder has its own character, and became extremely popular all along the New England and Canadian coasts. The word is probably related to the French chaudière, the cauldron used in Brittany to make a similar fisherman’s stew. Chowder is not a soup, although I suppose it is somewhere between a soup and a stew. It was conceived as a one-dish meal – and a hearty one at that... And then there's a lot more...

Supposedly it isn't really a soup, but a "hearty" meal with seafood and vegetables in a milk or tomato sauce...one vegetable seems staple - potatoes. Funny how complicated something can get when you choose to dig a little deeper. [This message was edited Tue Jan 21 13:12:35 PST 2003 by LaVisHh]
