Ouch. So you hate the south because you're black--why? Do you think southerners hate people who are black?

Let's put it this way. Even today in 2010, there are areas down there that let's just say a black man shouldn't get a blown tire or he's in for some shit.

I don't like the Southern accent.

And i'll be honest. I'm a city boy. Most of the Southern cities are just too damned slow paced for me. Atlanta bores the crap out of me. As does Houston and Dallas.

Well, I'm sorry you feel that way. I think it's unfair that one of the reasons you hate the south is because of many folks' accent, and sounds like you believe or have created many of your own unfair generalities about the south, but to each his own. I have lived in the south all my life, but I've been told by people who don't live in the south that I don't really have a "southern" accent (I think I do, though not a heavy one).

I'm curious because it's a part of the U,S. I've never visited. Never even been remotely near unless you count Miami, and I wouldn't. lol

Why? It just seems so foreign and alien compared to where I live. Laugh if you want, but those of you who have been to or know anything about Vancouver, Canada might understand what I'm getting at.

So -what cities/towns/states are worth a look? I know jack shit about pretty well any place in the South except that, if Futurama is to be believed, Atlanta will one day be under water.

Meow do you want to fly in a see one particular city? Or, do you wanna fly to a city and the see the region, via car, bus tour, and in some instances train?. For example: Memphis to New Orleans. You could start in Memphis ( highway 61) which can take you all the way to New Orleans. Stopping (depending on what you want to see, time constraints etc...) in Clarksdale, Mississippi (home of the blues), to Natchez Miss (Old plantations & mansions), Jackson Miss, then on to New Orleans. You could do the same from Charlotte to Savannah trip or go New Orleans use it as your base and strike out to surrounding region....taking side trips to Jackson/Natchez.

If you can kinda figure how you want to work it, let me know and I can offer you some suggestions.

Well, I will suggest a place as far south as you can get which is full of odd characters, artists, and misplaced foreigners, although I haven't lived there in many years--Key West, Florida. It was quite a town when I lived there in the 80s and I hear it still is! Island mentality, beaches, sailing, etc.(Only 90 miles from Cuba and a helluva history).

You do NOT go to New Orleans for a long-term place to live. You go to New Orleans for a place to party on a Friday & Saturday Night.

Washington DC! (Hey, Virginia seceded and Maryland wasn't all that pro-Union so I consider DC the south.) To be honest, I have no desire to go to the south (unless it's the southwest). I went to New Orleans in 1998 but haven't been there post-Katrina so I don't know how it is now. The worst wedding I've ever been to in my life was just outside of Atlanta. I know I'm making sweeping generalizations, but red states? Umm, no thanks. I'll stick to the north.

if you wanna come south, I don't see the point of visiting the metro areas people keep recommending...

I mean, you could travel anywhere to visit a major city, right???

Atlanta is hardly a shining example of southern hospitality and charm...

New Orleans is great, but a world all it's own in many ways....

anything below Jacksonville, Florida can't really be considered 'southern'...

Helen, Georgia has a wonderful Oktoberfest celebration...and is a beautiful lil' town....

the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina & Tennesssee are breathtaking in the fall...and beautiful year 'round...

the barrier islands off the coast of Georgia offer history, beaches, wildlife and unique culture...

the Gullah are scattered throughout the "lowcountry" of South Carolina and Georgia...their history, language and way of life, even in modern times, is amazing...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gullah

the Ichetucknee River/Ichetucknee Springs in north Florida are great...the water is around 72 degrees year round...and crystal clear...you can raft or tube down the river...it's one of the most relaxing things I've ever done...

the Okeefenokee Swamp at the Georgia-Florida border is something everybody should see atleast once...again, wildlife, history and local culture make it a very interesting place...

you aren't gonna get any idea what southern life or culutre is like by visitng a major southern city...stay off the beaten path just a lil' bit...

I know it's rough down there post-Katrina. I've got friends down there, and it's no joke.

Wait a minute. Did someone tell someone to intentionally go to ORLANDO? that place is HORRIBLE. and i don't think you can call Florida "the South".

LOL I've been to a lot of these places.

Tampa-nothing exciting, beach alright.
Miami-traffic hella scary (and I'm from NYC eek and have driven in Chicago eek eek ), nothing exciting except if you are driving then you basically fear for your life and piss your pants trying to get the hell away
Most of Florida-very bright and gaudy with horrible traffic and nothing exciting
Myrtle Beach SC-nice beach, enjoyed the aquarium and Ripley's museum, relaxing, if you like bikes, go during Bike Week
Atlanta GA-6 lanes of traffic and still horrible confused , enjoyed historical places-Gone With The Wind museum, resting place of Dr Martin Luther King, Presidential museums, Gladys' (as in Gladys Knight) Chicken and Waffles, definitely party town at night
North Carolina-nothing hella exciting, beaches are nice
Virginia-Busch Gardens-fun for kids, Virginia Beach-nice beach, seafood is really good
I can't think of any reason to go to W VA, TN, AL, MS

There are some nice historical musuems to visit if you are into the history of the Civil War and all, but basically the South is like one big blah of blah with some blah thrown in. If you like beaches then head to the coast. I would probably do that more than anything. I like Virginia the best, but then again as a yankee I try to stay as close to the Mason Dixon line as I can get. As a native NYer I am also jaded LOL, you just can't beat the food and atmosphere. NY is like having the whole world in 1 little space.

So very true.

It's common knowledge the further south you get in Florida the less southern it gets. lol

Where in Miami are you driving? lol

I've driven Miami several times (Kent, South Beach, all the way down to homestead), and thought it was kind of tame. Tampa's is worse in places.

Well I live in the South so I'm speaking from my personal experience. It's blah. You don't really have to like my opinion about how I feel about the part of the country I fucking reside in. It's no New York City.

Thanks and have a great day!

95! Tampa was a bit funky too, but that 95 stretch to miami is like "oh shit" confused And I drove throughout that whole state in 1 weekend! Hit Tampa, Miami, and Orlando LOL.

I've seriously worked the East Coast. At least I can also say I have seen the Pacific Ocean too!

buy cheesecake, and they will come! biggrin

Truly I've been in the South for years. It's meantto be blah.
Obviously it has some good qualities or I wouldn't stay.

I went home to NY once and some chick made me buy her a pizza and drive it all the way back! Not too many places can step to NY in terms of excitment, entertainment, food, etc.

Oh yeah when somone asks about up North travel, and I give them info about Boston, NY, PA, Chicago, MN, and SD....it's because I've lived or traveled up around there too. I speak what I know.

why are you stuck on comparing an entire region of the country to one city? I dont think you'll find anyone who doubts the positive attributes of NYC...but to say that the south as a whole is blah is dismissive as hell...that's like me saying the shitty experience I had on the L train makes Chicago a shitty place...

there are places and things you'll see down south that will astound you, things that are far removed from blah...things you'll never see in a metro area...even NYC...

look, if you'll agree to quit saying blah...I'll agree to quit wiping my ass with a vintage Brooklyn Dodgers jersey.... biggrin
