A teachers job is not to give love and attention... this happens at home.
Parents should love their kids up so that if stuff happens at school, any parent can reel in their child and end any negative behavior before it gets out of hand.

I have witnessed young pre-schoolers being encouraged to be "tough". One kid was taught karate just to beat on other classmates. He kicked my son in the face, when the child's father was in conference with me he told me "If you don't like then don't raise a punk ass kid... ", he even threatened the teacher.
I called the police and filed a complaint against him, his son was expelled from PRE-SCHOOL! dumb f#@@@(&^^ parent..... he will only teach his son how to end up dead or in jail.

The problem lies in parenting. Teachers teach lessons but not moral. Moral is (or should be) taught at home. Many parents don't actively show respect to others so they teach their children how to be hateful by default.

it's a tricky situation because if the parents are failing then the school feels like they have to step in. that's why schools started handing out condoms in schools...cuz parents were teaching these hot ass kids about safe sex.

I feel for any teacher who just wants to teach but gets derailed by all the social problems in the school. On the other hand, sometimes its just a few bad kids that ruin the whole bunch. neither school nor parents can intervene when you have truly mental health kids making school hard on everybody.

I say reduce class sizes.
Have a mental health care professional on site for emergency evaluations.
Make these parents come to school at least once a month and stay with their kid all freakin' day.
Feed these kids...half of their irritability is probably dietary based.
And if a kid gets violent one time...kick his/her ass out!

once upon a time, all schools had a nurse on site...

these days its a chaplain/guidance councellor...but half the time, its only on a part- time basis shared between schools

some situations need dealing with on the spot..not 3 days later when a staff member is available.
seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before music beret

Natural selection - it's a wonderful thing.

Darwinism; sirvival of the fittest. sigh

But that parent was a fucktard to encourage such a thing. disbelief And besides, it wasn't nice to call your son a punk ass, he was only four. sad

Yeah, but how many will he victimize along the way before he gets locked up?

Won't even get to that point. He'll get a lesson in life from someone tougher than he is. No matter how big and bad you think you are, there's always a cat bigger and badder.

True, but now a days, punks travel in packs.. as you can see in the case in Boston were it was a gang of teens that were messing with this one child.

Now they are talking about pressing charges on the administrators because they knew and did nothing.
I think the administrators should be held accountable so that SOMETHING is done to stop this type of behavior in schools.

Perhaps maybe if people were more diligent this girl would still be alive.
This started and kept going on at her school, her parents tried talking to school administrators to make it stop, nothing was done. Now a girl is dead.
People need to step up. It takes a village and those that are in education need to keep the bad seeds out if they can't keep them in check, not just for the safety of the student body, but also for their own safety as well.

The poor girl. Earlier this year, a group of girls started messing with my 13 year old girl and we too are in Boston. When I say this stuff escalates fast, I am not kidding. One of them even took a photo of her while she was changing for gym!!! She had a group of 7 against her because she would not tolerate being bullied by the ring leader. (My girl is tiny, only like 70lbs, and wears a kids size 10 slim. The other kids wore like a womans size 14 and literally were twice her size.)

I was on top of the thing the whole time. When it all started, I documented everything, made sure my face was seen at the school and made the school aware that I would sue the shit out of them if the rules were not implemented as harshly and swiftly as possible. When the photo was taken, the police were involved as I said the term "child pornography" so all of the girls tech shit was confiscated. If stuff got physical, belive me, my girl would be carrying mace. Statutory rape? I wouldn't have even complained to the school....lets just say his ass would have just turned up missing.....or maybe I would arrange for his ass to get raped.....
Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

TWO of the boys are up on statutory rape charges. I think she was raped by both boys and the state lowered charges to get them to confess. sigh

I just don't understand what drives some teens in general to go this far. Maybe that's because I'm a bit on the touchy-feely side myself. But harassing someone to the point where they kill themselves? And how could anyone defend these kids and write nasty messages on a dead young lady's page? It's sick. It literally has my stomach turning right now. sad

The lack of remorse and the enjoyment of all things negative and violent seems to have gone beyond what I knew as a teenager. And I went to an all-girl school where catty-ness was an art form. Even with all the taunting and jealousy, it never got to the point where people were killing themselves. At the most, there were weave-yanking fights and ruler brawls in the hallway.

The fact that faculty knew, and saw makes it worse. makes me very angry. Is it not their duty to aid children when things like this happen? Are they really turning a blind eye, because this guy and his goons are football stars? Or is it the boys will be boys clause going on here? This happens way too much with the taunting, jealousy, and the girlfights and so forth. What scares me the most is that this is the generation behind my own. When my generation is old, they're gonna be the next in line.

This poor, beautiful girl did not deserve to be tormented because some other jealous, insecure little tart couldn't handle the fact that she may have competition. It's sad that her friends went along. It's pathetic they had to follow and assault her. I felt VERY angry this morning when I heard this on the news. Throwing cans of drink at her and all that. And for what? Oh big deal she likes the same guy as you. And he is no better, apparently. So much in play here and it's all a very upsetting layer.

Blame it on technology, y'all. Seriously. It's not going to stop until parents limit cell phones and computer use or at least MONITOR what their kids are sending and receiving on line. Back in the day before the advent of computers and cell phones, we didn't have this rampant character assassination. What, kids might pass dirty notes or verbally harass, but rarely did you hear about kids committing suicide because of it.

Too many parents are trying to be "friends" with their kids or trying to appear the "cool" parent by condoning a lot of foolishness. And then when the shit hits the fan, they don't have a damn clue. Parents need to join together and allow some corporal among them. If they see a kid doing wrong, jack his/her ass right then and contact the parent. If the parent is an asshole and doesn't cooperate in the child's discipline, contact the school. If the school turns a blind eye, contact the Board of Education AND the police. Maybe if the community took a compelling and complete intervention on this issue, folk would take it seriously and begin to raise consciousness on these issues. It needs to start at home. If it continues, we will soon end up in complete anarchy.

disbelief ridiculous.

That's been going on forever, too. Back in the 90's my boo at the time's mom was a Florida schoolteacher; those classes were so over crowded the average reading level for her 8th graders was at 4th grade, and they used to have to divide the classes up and break them down to be taught in trailers...they were just completely out of room and out of resources...

Of course we had these issues before the advent of computers. I very well remember all the bullying scenarios of school life in the 70's and 80's and it was horrendous. Brutality is brutality with or without a tech screen to accompany it, and yes there were suicides, and attempted suicides, but without the aid of cyberspace these tragedies stayed in their own neighborhoods never to be seen or heard again after the initial 1 paragraph blurb in the local newspaper (if it was covered at all). I do agree with everything else you said, though. Like paintedlady posted, it takes a village...

I guess you're right about the 70's and 80's, but I was an adult by then and out of the loop when it came to kids and their shenanigans. I just don't ever remember hearing or reading about suicides due to bullying, not to say it never happened though. Good point.

Damn, you can't even send your kids to school these days without worrying about their safety. Now it's cyberbullying on facebook, myspace, texting lies/rumors about kids in school, kids taking photos of other kids and posting it on the net. Very sad. This society seems to be getting worse.

sorry for the late response...all of this rain and flooding is messing with my online social life. but seriously....you are screaming the truth here. Parents are no longer doing their job, and are being outrun by technology. TV was the prior babysitter, but children back in the day couldn't attack another child with it. Now the new babysitter is the computer....identical to leaving a child alone with a loaded weapon

You know, this is my girls first year in public. Prior to this, she was in private. Yes, they were catty but there was a limit to what kids were allowed to do to one another. I can no longer afford the 32K a year tuition bill, but she is in the top academic school in the city now, a school that one must academically compete to get into so only the kids at the top make it.

If this is how the TOP kids are acting, you gotta wonder what direction society as a whole is heading into.....

Wait...so she was cyber bullied, bullied in person and potentially sexually assaulted? No wonder she killed herself. What teenager could withstand all that? It's a shame that the kids who bulllied her can't even find it in their hearts to be remorseful cuz the girl is dead. It's this whole mob mentality. You get a group of hot-head, uncompassionate people together (adults or kids) and it's amazing how vile they can be. Now watch, all these bad ass kids who were friends are going to turn on each other to save their own necks.

nod That's exactly what's happening now. Once the courts got involved the teachers are now coming forward because the school didn't want to be held responsible. confused Um, yeah, teachers saw all this mess and didn't help her at all.

How in the hell can any public school teacher help put a stop to the bullying without the risk of getting slap with a lawsuit for putting their own hands on the students that are the bullies?!?

Heard on the news today that the four girls responsible for the bullying are being tried in court as adults. If convicted, they could end up in jail and a permanent record for life. Two males involved are being investigated for statutory rape.
