I hope not. I have a friend that turns 50 on 12/20/2012. It could be the greatest party of all time.

Or the last!

It is VERY rare to see something in the UK or American news media about my country, so the constant media coverage now is kinda unusual for me as someone who lives there.
This is probably the first time I've ever seen an American talkshow host mention Iceland (he's talking about the volcanic eruption), except maybe when talking about Björk:

It might seem odd due to the closeness to the activity but all the airports in Iceland have been open since the most recent activity started.

Of course flights to most European destinations are closed but the North American flights have been on schedule. I should also add that some airports have been opening, especially in those areas that were sort of on the "edge" of the affected zone, specificially airports in Norway and Spain.

There have been several flights to Trondheim in Norway, even from Iceland, so it seems like that the ash cloud has shifted its course a bit.

If so then why worry about global warming? Or the deficit or debt? or health care?

falloff at Fox News' Megyn Kelly covering the volcano situation:
"The name of the glacier (Eyjafjallajökull) has so many letters I'm not gonna try to pronounce it"
And it didn't seem like she was at all concerned at how a second, more powerful eruption in another volcano close by, would affect the people living on the island, but was only concerned about colder winters in the US.
OK, to be fair, she did pronounce the name of the volcano that could possibly blow (Katla). She didn't pronounce it correctly, but she did try. biggrin

As of Sunday all German airports were still closed. It's amazing how this is affecting air traffic on an international level, and taking little digs into the economy, international relations & the like. Our Chancelor (Angela Merkel) is stuck in Portugal and will have to drive back to Germany. Artists who are doing concert tours on either side of the pond can't make their gigs (last I heard Whitney Houston was at least on this side of the pond, had to ferry over to continental Europe). Music festival season seems to be kicking off in the US and international acts from over here are stuck. President Obama has to figure out how to attend the funeral of the Polish President...and so on. On a smaller scale of how this was even affecting people around me; my choir director at church was due for a visit from her mom from St. Louis, hadn't seen her in ages and they were going to train travel across the country. She got a text during the yesterday's service that the flight was cancelled and was devestated (they put so much time and planning into this trip and have no idea when she can come visit again). Friends have a wedding that's been 2 years in the making come Saturday; it's supposed to be officiated by our former pastor who now lives in Florida, and his flight is supposed to depart on Weds. sigh. Being a part of an international church with so many transient members, yesterday's service was chock full of horror stories of people who had been directly impacted from this. I felt so goofy not really being able to console anyone beyond, "it's the safest thing for everyone". But beyond the inconvenience and financial disaster of it all it's the only solution. We have a friend that used to fly for Luftansa before the air technology was invented to respond to disasters like this: back in the old days, there was a plane that was flying through what was presumably a cloud, when actually it was volcanic ash. Within moments all the engines stopped, and only by the grace of God they were able to get just one functioning enough to make an emergency landing.

nod It's crazy. I am so very thankful that neither I nor my bf have a flight coming up in the near future as that would be a total nightmare.
With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Yes, pretty much all flights in all countries. Sweden is completely shut down, a few airports in the north could open for a couple hours yesterday but not now. NOTHING. It's the biggest no-fly since WWII but it's not really comparable. It's weird how sensitive the infra structure really is. sad

it was freaky, I was at the airport getting on a flight to the south pacific and jumbo jets just sitting there on the tarmac doing NOTHING
