Remind me not to getaway in Reykjavik this year. The amount if Iceland volcanic activity is starting go through the roof, as they have erupting volcanoes and there are a lot of earthquakes going on. A lot of people are believing it's high time to get a personal loan, or get pay day loans or whatever and give them to churches because the end times are upon us, but in reality these things happen all the time. There's really no 100% safe destination on earth from geological activity – it's the way our planet works.

While the new eruption is not at the exact same place as the earlier eruption, it is 10-20 times more powerful.

I should note that the Reykjavik area has not been affected by these eruptions. There has been, however, a steady flow of tourists, both Icelanders and foreigners, driving from Reykjavik to check out the area close to the eruption.
I think some of the roads in the area are closed at the moment, because of high risk of flooding.

It's very convenient for SOME people that this is happening as a special report about the bank crash of 2008 and the people responsible for it was released just two days ago - it certainly diverts the attention from the guilty folks in that issue - but that's probably a discussion for another thread.

Some news for the American orgers:
ABC's Good Morning America will be broadcasting live next Monday morning from the glacier (or next to the glacier) where the latest eruption is taking place.

Now there are plumes of volcanic ash heading towards the UK and other places in Northern Europe, causing disruption in flight schedules.
It has already halted flights to and from the UK.

A very "mature" response from a concerned Scotsman at the airport.... gotta love the Scottish

Here's a guide to how to pronounce the name of the glacier (Eyjafjallajökull), as many international newscasters have butchered the name of the glacier, each time in a slightly different way
