Explain FOOTBALL (soccer) to me

OK, I'm familiar with the rules at rudimentary level.

But I have no clue what a league is or what it even means to be in a league.

What exactly is a league? Can seperate leagues compete against each other?

Believe it or not I don't even know what it is for American football (nor what divisions are).

Yes, I'm really that stupid. Please explain to me.
I'm trying to butch up for 2010. Thanks.

a league is a collection of teams.
yes, leagues can compete against each other. in Europe, the champions of each individual national league play against each other to see who is the best team in Europe. this is called the Champions League.

Now answer me this....

So I was hanging out with my mother's best friend's husband (a German fella) who tried to explain to me in VERY broken English (I spoke even more broken German lol) about the various 'levels' of teams and what 'level' team Kaiserslaughtern was.

What is he referring to? level ? lol

Is there a book I can pick up to learn this shit?

I'm trying to be more butch for 2010.

the bigger European nations (England, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, etc.) have multiple divisions-a top division where all the really famous teams and players are, and then several lower divisions.

if a team finishes in the bottom 3 or 4 places in their division, they can drop down to the next lowest division. this is called 'relegation' (that is what happened to Kaiserslautern a few years back).

the only way back to the top is to finish in the top 2 or 3 places in the lower division, earning you a place in the higher division again (Kaiserslautern have not done this since they were relegated, and they remain in the German 2nd division today).

yes, there are loads of books about this. any of the 'dummies' books would sort you out, i reckon.

Here's all you need to know - this explains the English football league system:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...gue_system
I think the German system is similar, basically it's a hierarchy system, so that teams can go up to a higher ranking league, stay in their current league or go down to a lower ranking league, depending on their scores for a particular season.

No problem. smile
I don't watch football that much, but the stuff I know about it is because many of my friends follow the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

The Icelandic national football team sucks for the most part (never qualified for the World Cup), but we have a few good players that play in the lower ranking leagues in England and one player (Eidur Gudjohnsen) who plays for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
That's him (picture from when he played with FC Barcelona):

But most Icelanders don't bother with the local teams - they just watch the English Premier League.

Plus where I come from (a small village), as a kid, if you did not say you supported Liverpool in the Premier League, it was almost as if you were begging to get your ass kicked. lol

falloff Well, before that happens, you can at least listen to his voice razz ...

I was actually surprised at how English his accent is... I usually try to "hide" my Icelandic accent, but most people don't, even when they've lived abroad for a while like a certain female singer. lol

On the one hand, rugby players seem to have a lot of homoerotic tendencies, and that is freaking hot.

On the other hand, those soccer players have an awful lot of accidental popouts, and that's hot too.

soccer: the act of chiseling your abs and giving yourself obliques while playing a "sport"

american football: the act of behaving in a latently gay manner while playing a "sport"

rugby: the act of behaving in a very gay manner while drunk and beefy.

I will be able to tell you more about football/soccer after this years World Cup.
This is my first one and it should be interesting since the US and the UK are playing.
I have already bought the baby England shoes and outfit for the event. Now I need to find some US stuff to balance it out. I have a feeling daddy will not let him wear a US kit though.
confused

Scarily, I know most of the names of these fellows and which teams they play on.

I need to check out the US squad, there is no one cute playing for England.
