TheVoid said: whistle said: a league is a collection of teams. yes, leagues can compete against each other. in Europe, the champions of each individual national league play against each other to see who is the best team in Europe. this is called the Champions League. Thanks, snugglepuff Now answer me this.... So I was hanging out with my mother's best friend's husband (a German fella) who tried to explain to me in VERY broken English (I spoke even more broken German ) about the various 'levels' of teams and what 'level' team Kaiserslaughtern was. What is he referring to? level ? Is there a book I can pick up to learn this shit? I'm trying to be more butch for 2010. Ask your German friend about Kilmarnock Football Club. Thats my team and we've played Kaiserslaughtern a couple of times, edit....I meant to add that the Bundesleague is crap now. [Edited 3/19/10 8:58am] Do you play yourself? Just personal opinion; anyway, I've played (in amateur level) soccer, hockey and basketball, (and rugby in semi-pro level) and clearly soccer was the easiest of them all, at least for me...easy rules, easy objectives, plenty of folks who help you when you're surrounded, not the frantic pace of a basketball game...

No problem. I don't watch football that much, but the stuff I know about it is because many of my friends follow the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. The Icelandic national football team sucks for the most part (never qualified for the World Cup), but we have a few good players that play in the lower ranking leagues in England and one player (Eidur Gudjohnsen) who plays for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. That's him (picture from when he played with FC Barcelona): But most Icelanders don't bother with the local teams - they just watch the English Premier League. Plus where I come from (a small village), as a kid, if you did not say you supported Liverpool in the Premier League, it was almost as if you were begging to get your ass kicked. [Edited 3/18/10 17:37pm] What about Hreidarsson and Helguson - both very famous players!

Superficially, football is easy, yes. But there are situations in which you need perfect knowledge of rules (talking about advantage-goals in a previous off-side situation and all that). And what you said about pace.. well, it probably comes from the "amateur level" thing. In many leagues (in Europe, for instance, the youth leagues can be very, very tough already - physically and tactically) you can take two touches on a ball before somebody piles you or ruins your ankles, and during those one to two seconds you have to control the ball and pass it perfectly to a team-mate (whom you have to locate and whose route you have to anticipate) and then keep on running yourself again. It also takes loads of pace, quick reacting, balance and out-thinking your opponent to dribble. And playing an inch-perfect, curling pass over 30 yards while running can also be quite challenging.

Not anymore, but those two used to be world class players. Helguson has a nice touch with both feet and used to be very powerful. But with age he lost pace, of course... And Hreidarsson had a good spell with Ipswich back then.

What you said about the pace in the pro level is true. But then again, any sport is HARD in pro level, but I still think pro-soccer/football is one of the easiest games compared to other sports in pro level...but perhaps that's just me. Or maybe what happens is that only a few teams (right now, Barcelona, Man Utd, Arsenal and perhaps Inter) manage to truly master the art of football, and that's why any other "lesser" team gets thrashed... look at the recent Arsenal 5 - Oporto 0, or the Barcelona 4 -Stuttgart 0... Anyway, football is one of the most dangerous sports in the injury department ; 6 months with your ankle broken if you're not lucky

Anyway, football is one of the most dangerous sports in the injury department ; 6 months with your ankle broken if you're not lucky It's true that few teams are really successful nowaday, compared to earlier days, when sometimes any team could play in Europe, but that is mainly due to rich teams getting richer and poor teams getting poorer and owners from Asia, the middle east and the U.S. fucking up traditional clubs by "gambling". Btw, it's great you say Man Utd and not "ManU". Was it really your intent not to use "ManU"; do you know about that story? And, yep, that happened quite a few times to me and eventually ended my football career. I've torn ligaments in both ankles many times, had to be operated on, broke my ankle, tore ligaments in my knees and my back basically is also fucked up because of football. It still makes me very sad, because I loved playing football and I even started a couple of games for the U16 national team and was told that I could go all the way up, before I was told I had to stop playing

Such calmness, power and accuracy in front of goal. Amazing. And he even got his heading right! 8 out of his last 10 goals headed, and that's after five seasons with not more than three headed goals altogether
