When I lived in Thailand, I became friends with a local couple who owned a restaurant. A month before leaving to come home, they took me into the kitchen and showed me how to cook all my favourite dishes smile

which is great, but I'm always having unexpected guests now, usually around tea time. Haha, I don't mind though, love cooking the stuff

it's alright, even Thais don't bother with them unless they're eating noodles. Spoon and a fork and you're sorted wink

my favourite meal was pad kra pow gai (probably spelt wrong), but you need holy basil to make it right, and I can't get any in the uk. Can get the sweet stuff that tastes of aniseed, but not the holy stuff sad

Do a search on-line. You can find most any ingredient on the net.

Good question. Have no idea, but while you're there, try to get someone to show you how to cook the good stuff you like. Then you'll be set when you get back home!

I have already found an english-speaking vegetarian cooking school. I plan to take a few classes while I'm there.

I already do a fair amount of thai-inspired cooking myself, mostly curries.

they don't have anything specific really. They just have rice and more of the same. I used to have fruit for breakfast most of the time... Or pad thai gai if I had a hangover wink

I absolutely love it. I don't know any of the names of the dishes though because I'll be eating them off the buffet. My favorite is one that is made with chicken (I think) and is in a pink looking sauce made with coconut milk.

You inspired me to try it today so I went on line and looked up local Thai restaurants. I found one that had GREAT reviews so off I went. I found the place, it was nice and I told the waitress/cashier I had never had Thai food before. She told me what people usually got, Pad Thai or the Crispy Cashew chicken. Growing up eating filipino food I have a thing for glass noodles so I ordered the Pad Woon Sen with pork. OHMIGOD It was sooo good!. Spicy but good.
So thank you for this thread, you helped me to experience something new today.

You're so welcome! I'm glad you were able to expand your culinary experience! Yeah, most people go for the Pad Thai, but I'm not too big on it. I guess when I had it, it wasn't that good that day, but I've seen reviews where people just love it.

See my earlier post. Sometimes Thais will just eat any old food the same as they would for lunch or dinner (though not fried chicken and probably not curry lol), especially if there are leftovers from the day before, but there are some dishes that are typically eaten for breakfast.

- Jok (Rice soup, usually with liver, pork balls, chives, ginger, and often 1 or 2 eggs)
- Khao man kai (chicken on greasy oil cooked rice)
- guay jap or similar variations (noodles, crispy pork, boiled egg, cubes of pork blood, and miscellaneous lol )
- khai jiaw (omelet, often khai jiaw moo sap, with pork mince)
- khao moo daeng (red pork on rice, often half half with crispy pork)

Khao man kai and guay jap places are very busy in the mornings. They usually sell everything and shut up shop by midday. Nice business if you can get it!

There's a dish I'm going to have this morning that you might like to try. I forget what the veggie is but my mother in law always buys kilos of it when she goes back to her hometown (Suphanburi) because it's so cheap there (30 cents a kilo). It's normally made using pork mince too but to be honest it doesn't need it. Just the veggies in the sauce on rice would be really good.

Can't find a picture of it, but I'm having 'phad sai bua moo sap'. It's like lotus or waterlily stems fried with pork mince. You could easily have it without the mince though. 30 cents a kilo and it tastes great!

Here's 'sai-bua' in another dish (kati sai bua kap plaa thoo)

Some of these dishes you just won't find on a restaurant menu outside of Thailand, but if you do see something with 'sai-bua' I would definitely recommend it. smile

I should tell you, I also found a yoga retreat on an island there that I plan to spend a few days at. Basically doing yoga all day in between them feeding me more yummy vegetarian food.

I'm gonna be in heaven.
