I have to admit I drink diet soda a lot, and I know that aspartame is god awful, but high-fructose corn syrup is even worse. omg omfg shake Sucralose probably is just as bad as aspartame; it's just too new to have any studies of its adverse effects.

What they need to do is bring back sugar-based soda products for regular consumption, and for dieters and diabetics they should use stevia as a sweetener. Stevia is natural and has no adverse side effects, and it is already used in Japan, Europe, and South America.

I'd rather be psychotic than fat. No-one would have killed for Charlie Manson if he was a chubby cunt. Fat and psychotic, though? Man, that's a bad hand. That's Henry the Eighth. And there was no aspertame around back then either, just roasted boar and incest.

I won't eat any artificial sweeteners - unless there's no way around it.

I'd rather use-up my nine lives with cigarettes, than saccharine and aspartame.

It is unavoidable at times though... I mean, imagine how rancid toothpaste would be without sweeteners?

There are actually organic toothpastes that use anise and other substances instead of aspertame.

The reason why aspartame is legal has everything to do with how cheap it is to manufacture rather than how safe it is. It was rejected 9 times before approved in a political move. It's also the most widely reported substance for side affects which the FDA has to deal with.

That´s true but most of the natural toothpastes really taste horrible...and I´ve tried a lot of them.
I avoid aspartame as much as possible but most of my protein powders contain it, and even those who say "aspartame free" contain some kind of dubious sweetener. If it´s not aspartame, they simply put other stuff in it, like saccharin or whatever.

I´d much rather eat white sugar instead of aspartame or high fructose corn syrup. Too bad that aspartame is almost unstoppable now. And you can´t even avoid over here these days.

Lead. The rich used to rub lead into their skin to make themselves paler, and lead is a neuro-toxin.

I don't fucking touch the stuff. AT ALL! I read labels, and don't go near it. My mother, and my stepmother both started suffering terrible headaches after ingesting that poison.

And PaintSprayer is correct about Donny Rumsfeld. The man is a fucking monster when it comes to the good of the United States, whether it's lying about a war, or putting out poison in soda bottles.

True, true. I wonder how much stock he still has in aspartame, and how much money it brings him annually. That dude is from around here, by the way. His sister lives very close to where I live ( in Germany) and I think she still owns a jewelry store here.He used to visit her regularly up until the late 80s.

Update: March 2010 - Aspartame has been renamed and is now being marketed as a natural sweetener - called AminoSweet. Don't be fooled.. it is the same old toxic substance!
-----

by Nancy Markle

I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on "ASPARTAME marketed as 'NutraSweet', 'Equal', and Spoonful"'. In the keynote address by the EPA, they announced that there was an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus, and they did not understand what toxin was causing this to be rampant across the United States. I explained that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.

When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. (Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants. read more: http://www.besthealth.com...artame.htm

(is this a theory or a real finding?)

Remember Dynasty, when Adam painted Jeff Colby's office at Colby Co with poison paint?

Jeff divorced Fallon after strangling her; gave all his Denver Carrington shares to Alexis and married Kirby, the butler's daughter.

This is comparable to the effects of drinking one Diet Coke a day.

They should add that in as a final paragraph in the next edition of the Bible.

I'm writing it. I'm going to call it 'The Next Testament'. It's going to be about the teachings of the real J.C.

Well, Dynasty was an analogy for the Biblical story of Adam and his troublesome sons. I guess Alexis was the snake and Crystal's repeated failure to conceive is a euphamism for the Original Sin manifest in all Eve's offspring, infected with mortality, birthing death as the shadow cast by all with eyes to see and define it.

Why is the market being flooded with products containing aspertame?
eek

Because Donald Rumsfeld was one of the original backers of the company, and after aspertame was rejected over and over eventually Ronald Reagan allowed him to hand pick an FDA board to aprove it

I remember reading that but people don't believe it when you try to tell them. I use either sugar, honey or stevia.

I can't stand the aftertaste. I tried a vitamin water made with stevia last night, and I spit it out.

Completely natural, and a favorite of raw veganists. Plus it has a low glycemic count and mild flavor. I used to use the stuff all the time.

I sweetens things perfectly.
The flavor is very mild though---honey is much more pronounced and distinct. Agave is actually almost flavorless compared to honey other than it's sweet.

Sounds like sugar water or syrup (1 part water, 1 part sugar, reduced over heat by half). Sounds like a good alternative. I wonder how it tastes in coffee? Honey in coffee is gross to me. I usually buy and use raw sugar, or whatever unrefined stuff I can find. (Nothing white.)

It would probably taste just like sugar because, as I've said, Agave is EXTREMELY mild.

I mean, I made dips with agave for my vegan rolls and such, and you'd never know it came from any type of tropical fruit at all. It's just that mild.

Great stuff to use as a sweetener.

i went to whole foods this week end and discovered:

i got cinnamin flavored.

ingredients: xylitol, enchinacea, licorice, guto kola, myrrh gum, natural flavors. gum arabic, soy lechithin, glycerin and carnuabwax

xylitol is. according to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylitol

Xylitol
is a sugar alcohol sweetener used as a naturally occurring sugar substitute. It is found in the fibers of many fruits and vegetables, including various berries, corn husks, oats, and mushrooms. It can be extracted from corn fiber, birch, raspberries, plums, and corn. Xylitol is roughly as sweet as sucrose with only two-thirds the food energy. As with most sugar alcohols, initial consumption can result in bloating, diarrhea, and flatulence, although generally rather less so than other sugar alcohols like sorbitol.
Dietary use worldwide
Xylitol is widely used in Finland, its "home country." Many Finnish confectioneries employ xylitol, or have a xylitol version available. Virtually all chewing gum sold in Finland is sweetened with xylitol. Specific brands of sugarfree gum containing xylitol include Stride, Orbit, and Trident.
