How safe is Aspertame, the artificial sweetener?

Have you noticed how difficult it is to buy chewing gum that contains no aspertame? If you go to the super market, or a 7-11 it is totally impossible to buy gum containing no aspertame.

As for me, I've chosen to give up any foods containing aspertame as I noticed it caused me to have an annoying cough and seemed to be directly connected to my having a constant post-nasal drip. When I stopped buying food products and chewing gum containing aspertame all the above symptoms seemed to have vanished.

So I decided to look up some of the possible negative side affects of aspetame and found numerous results.
as in: http://www.sweetpoison.co...ation.html

Dangers of Aspartame Poisoning

The dangers of aspartame poisoning have been a well guarded secret since the 1980s. The research and history of aspartame is conclusive as a cause of illness and toxic reactions in the human body. Aspartame is a dangerous chemical food additive, and its use during pregnancy and by children is one of the greatest modern tragedies of all.
Why haven't you heard about aspartame poisoning before? Partly because the diet industry is worth trillions of American dollars to corporations, and they want to protect their profits by keeping the truth behind aspartame's dangers hidden from the public. When NutraSweet® was introduced for the 'second' time in 1981, a diet craze revolutionized America's eating protocols and a well-oiled money machine was set into motion changing modern lifestyles.

After more than twenty years of aspartame use, the number of its victims is rapidly piling up, and people are figuring out for themselves that aspartame is at the root of their health problems. Patients are teaching their doctors about this nutritional peril, and they are healing themselves with little to no support from traditional medicine.

Why is the market being flooded with products containing aspertame?
Someone please prove me wrong with some concrete information to the contrary.

I'm feeling a lot of concern here. eek

Because Donald Rumsfeld was one of the original backers of the company, and after aspertame was rejected over and over eventually Ronald Reagan allowed him to hand pick an FDA board to aprove it

I believe in everything in moderation. For me, that includes aspartame.

I do not think it's good for you and the very idea of it is just wrong to me (why are we treating all of our food with chemicals???) but I don't think it's THAT bad either. I base that on my own personal experiences as well as the conflicting studies that have been done.

I do consume a lot less of it than I did even 2 years ago, but it's still something I eat, just sparingly.

I don't chew gum, so that's not an issue for me. I'm just someone who has to CONSTANTLY watch calories. And while I've managed to drop 50 pounds over the last year, I still need to lose another 20-40 more. By sipping the occasional soda or drink that's flavored with aspartame instead of sugar, it helps me keep that calorie count down. And that's the only way I consume it. And like I said, it's sparingly.

I won't eat any artificial sweeteners - unless there's no way around it.

I'd rather use-up my nine lives with cigarettes, than saccharine and aspartame.

It is unavoidable at times though... I mean, imagine how rancid toothpaste would be without sweeteners?

There are actually organic toothpastes that use anise and other substances instead of aspertame.

The reason why aspartame is legal has everything to do with how cheap it is to manufacture rather than how safe it is. It was rejected 9 times before approved in a political move. It's also the most widely reported substance for side affects which the FDA has to deal with.

The market is being flooded with aspartame because it is very, very, very lucrative for companies to use it instead of sugar--it's many, many times sweeter than sugar (despite the aftertaste) so you can use much less of it.

And this is why I no longer chew gum. It's in enough other stuff that I just can't have a constant flow of it like I did with gum.

If you get a soda from a fountain (as opposed to buying a bottle or can), there is actually less aspartame in it.

Aspartame isn't shelf stable - it loses its sweetness with time and temperature. So for soda fountains (where sodas are blended on the spot with syrup and carbonated water), they use a blend of aspartame and saccharin. That way, if the syrup gets too warm at any point in shipping or storage, it won't be a total loss for the entity serving it - and it can be used longer.

Cinnamon Trident used to be the only sugarless gum I could find that used sucralose (Splenda) instead of aspartame.

But it's become very hard to find, for some reason. pout

Nope. Totally different thing. Well...I mean...they're both organic compounds...but sucralose is identical to sucrose (sugar) except for chlorides in place of three hydroxyl groups. That change makes sucralose some 600 times sweeter than sucrose and over three times as sweet as aspartame. It's also heat stable.

They sneak that shit in everything these days.
Very frustrating for those of us who try to stay away from it.

I read a few articles linking it to Gulf War Syndrome because it is not heat stable yet they were sending diet sodas to the soldiers.

I gave up aspartame and high-fructose corn syrup almost a year ago. It was a great decision, I think, and I feel really good about it. I do a lot more cooking at home now, but it's still pretty difficult to avoid them both.

I work at a day center for adults with developmental disabilities.

The ONLY thing they give the clients to drink (other than the available water fountains) is diet soda. They drink it all day long. I hate it - these people have enough health problems as it is! Aside from the aspartame, all that carbonation is hell on their digestive systems. sad

But the agency I work for is a piece of shit, and Coca-Cola donates the soda. (The reason it's all diet is that many of our clients are diabetic.) God forbid the agency actually come out of their pocket and buy milk or 100% juice. They're like that with everything - if they can get something free, they will, rather than spend any money. It drives me fucking crazy.
It's what you make it.

Here they put it in soda's and squash (concentrated fruit drinks) along with sugar and do not have to label it diet.
So you have to read the fine print very carefully.

I don't fucking touch the stuff. AT ALL! I read labels, and don't go near it. My mother, and my stepmother both started suffering terrible headaches after ingesting that poison.

And PaintSprayer is correct about Donny Rumsfeld. The man is a fucking monster when it comes to the good of the United States, whether it's lying about a war, or putting out poison in soda bottles.

It is actually a good idea, wastes less plastic than buying it already made. I think they drink it here because their fridges are so damn tiny.
