Buying on ebay.

There's a phenomenon I don't understand. I'm currently watching an xbox game. It retails for $60. I got a wild hair and decided to ebay it rather than just go buy it. Not sure why, it was just something to do today and maybe I'd save a few bucks. Now when I say a few bucks, I mean at least $10.

People are bidding these up to $55 and paying $4-5 shipping. They are paying retail AND then have to wait for the item to ship to them.

Any compelling explanations for this? Why not just go to the store?

Some people may not live close to somewhere that sells them... Alot of people who live in rural areas shop on ebay cuz you can get a decent price, and it will ship to you instead of you driving for over an hour or more to shop for it...

wanna know my theory? They're bidding it up themselves with other accounts to fake interest and thereby get some dummy to pay more.

shrug

I gave up on trying to get games (at least new ones) on ebay. It's easier to just pay the jack and get it at Target.

That's a good thought, I actually did consider that, but something as common as a 360 game doesn't seem to fit that bill. It is possible I suppose but you would have to live in a VERY rural area.

I opted for NHL 10. As much of a geek for baseball as I am, the games usually end up boring me. shrug

I have 08 though.

I once bought a DVD (Six Feet Under I think) on ebay for about £18 + postage.

It arrived, from a DVD retailer, paid for by the seller but shipped to my address. £14.99 with free postage said the packing slip.

I just sold some shoes, but they were rare. Hopefully they're not picking up some Keds or something.

I had that happen with a Hard Drive. Turns out the seller had stolen credit cards, would collect the money from Ebay and then order from New Egg with the stolen credit cards.

New Egg came after ME saying they were gonna make me send the HD back or they would hit my credit report. I was like, um, you have zero info on me, I paid for the product and got it. Your business is not my problem.

It's just crazy what people will "bid" on a two bit item

When I buy from e-bay I search buy it now + free shipping and if it costs more then driving the 45 minutes each way to the store I don't buy it

I usually know what I want and how much it's worth before even going to the e-bay site

The competition and thrill of winning an auction overcomes people's ability to think stright. When the seconds are counting down, some people lose their minds and overbid just so they won't lose the auction regardless of whether or not the item is worth that much.

Well, aye. I thought it'd lend me a bit of glamour and bold girlish flamboyance thereby making me interesting to the opposite sex and intimidating to other men without even opening my mouth.
However, I quickly realised you either need to be an ugly bastard like Bob Dylan - which makes the showbiz shirt a ironic, spitefully sarcastic gesture - or a boygirl space creature like Prince to pull it off. I'm neither. I'm a self-obsessed, insecure wank who is £160 out of pocket with a fancy teatowel.

Yes, this is it exactly. I was bidding on an item years ago and won. Next thing I know, a bidder who lost to my bid emailed me and cussed me out for "stealing his auction!" I sniped the item and this jerk felt my bid was unfair. People will buy any and everything on ebay!

I noticed this same thing going on with gift cards. Seriously...look up any gift card on Ebay and most of the bids are for nearly close to the value and a lot actually over!

I guess there is a common scam on Ebay where a scammer bids on something, usually going over the value. After they pay through Paypal, and get the item, they then file a complaint with Paypal and have the charges reversed. They end up with their money and the item.
