Newer movie thread What have you seen lately and what did you think of it?
I was thinking of going to see Brooklyn's Finest or Shutter Island today. Critics are killing Brooklyn's Finest, so I figured it probably pretty good. [Edited 3/6/10 10:22am] If you're not doing the fucking, then you're taking one.

The last two movies I've seen are Shutter Island and Up in the Air. I didn't like either of them.

The last three movies I've seen, all for the Oscars tomorrow:
The Secret of Kells 1/2 (out of five) - Great trippy Celtic animation! No chance though in beating Up for best animated feature this year. Coco Before Chanel - Mildly pleasing biopic about Coco Chanel. Wonderful period fashions earned it a best costume design nomination. Fantastic Mr. Fox Very cool stop-motion animated feature. I particularly liked the retro feel of this film from the animation style (stop-motion) to the music (an amalgam of mid 60s styles). [Edited 3/6/10 12:37pm]

I saw it twice in the theatre, even. |

Eh, I'm never good at ranking things. I really liked them both, just in different ways and for different things. I'd root for Coraline to win (though they won't) based on who was involved (I'm such a Neil Gaiman fan) but if Mr Fox won, I'd be happy with that. Sadly, I think it will go to Up and I saw it and didn't care for it much. |

It wasn't bad. Jeff Bridges' performance was better than the film overall which to me was like a TV movie. Colin Farell shocked me being cast as the younger country singer! [Edited 3/6/10 12:39pm]

It's on my list, but I haven't yet. I did go see the Werner Herzog/David Lynch film 'My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done' last weekend and I really, really liked it! But it's definitely not gonna be for everyone. |

Can't decide if we want to go see Alice In Wonderland or Crazy Heart.
I can rarely justify the expensive of going to the movie theater.

I can rarely justify the expensive of going to the movie theater. I can ALWAYS justify it. I love going to the movies. Going to a movie is cheaper than going to dinner if you skip the treats, which are really bad for you anyway. |

I can rarely justify the expensive of going to the movie theater. Can you see Alice in IMAX 3D? If so, I'd say pick that movie for the special effects since it won't look as nice as a rental. But if you'd rather see good acting in a drama then choose Crazy Heart.

And there's an art house theater within walking distance of where I live that charges half price on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I swear I'm there every week.

I bring my own candy if I feel the need for a snack. I am really cheap.

Everytime I'm back home, I always go to the IFC theatre alone or accompanied, it doesn't matter. The BEST movies I've seen are in the IFC. They're to theatres, what criterion collection are to DVDs

A friend and I used to go to one of the art house theatres in Uptown every weekend that was walking distance from where we lived. The first show of the day was the discounted one, so we'd just see whatever was playing that we hadn't seen already. I don't get out as often these days. I should just go by myself more. I have seen movies alone, I just usually think of other things to do if I'm not hangin' out. |

I haven't had cable for about 10 years. So I catch up on everything I want to watch that way. |

There're alot of indie movies and documentaries that don't get shown in my neck of the woods, and I would've joined netflix FOR THEM had it not be SO damn limiting to Canada/US I have to wait till they get released on DVDs in order to purchase them(and mind you, 1/2 of them don't get distributed).
