They really stuffed up with the wording for this article. As they clearly state (which a lot of you are missing) is that they believe desktops will die for your average joe who all he does is browse the internet and doesn't do anything a phone or other device can do these days.
But for everyone else (gamers/graphic designers etc) it will be impossible to do what they need efficiently on a phone as there just isn't enough power for them to support the software, nor is the screen big enough. I imagine you will have a keyboard and mouse hooked to your TV, your phone will act as the computer. Access it on the phone's screen and QWERTY when you are mobile, dock it when you get home and use the TV and keyboard, but the phone will still be the computer part. Hell, I doubt you'll even need to dock it, it will automatically switch to the TV whenever it is in range, then switch back when it is not. Optical drives are becoming a thing of the past...it will all be flash based. That includes TV's, most all TV's sold now have a USB port, and eventually it will be wireless anyway. Movies and such don't need discs anymore...that will all be on demand streaming..it's already starting. I totally agree. The smartphone, in 10 years, is going to be used for essentially everything...your debit and credit transactions, filling out forms at doctor offices, unlocking your home and car locks, starting your car, housing ALL your music, playing music in your car, ears, home...watching security cameras in your home remotely, remote control just about everything you own, etc. etc.... Make no mistake, it will be the advertising nightmare you expect it to be also, why in the world do you think corporate america is so behind the tech??? It is a DIRECT line, to you the consumer, as never seen before. It's a brave new dystopia we are entering into. But JerseyKRS, how will we illegally download music and porn? Who needs to download porn anymore? There are so many PornTube sites out there that you can be awash in hot fucking without even having to save anything. But I suppose if you have to get that latest Lady GaGa album or that first 3D porn flick you can show on your huge HD flat screen in your living room, you probably will need a desktop PC to run your torrent download program.

Technically, there are already media center PC's that you plug into your TV that turns your TV into a computer monitor so you can do all of your computing plus it works as a DVR and can work with Netflix or whatever video-on-demand service is out there. I suppose the difference in the future is that the media PC/gaming device will be built into the flat screen television you buy at the electronics store or your cable/satellite set-top box will be a full functioning PC as well as TV box/DVR.

ugh. i don't want any of that. constantly being forced to get new phones
or computers or whatever. i just don't want to learn how to use all that stupid shit. 90% of it is boring, compared to 10% actual daily convenience. i need to be slowly coaxed into any new appliance about 4 months ago i got a new tv and it's got a usb port and all but it wasn't until this weekend that i've finally decided to put some movies on a usb stick and try to watch a movie on the tv like that. it worked well and i'm happy with that. but if my tv had 50 different new functions like that, it would already be either outdated or even broken before i'd even wanted to try them all. same thing with mobile phones. my friends have what i call "uberphones". those things make me fcking nervous. my own phone is pretty basic, tho these days, you just can't escape it having about 45 different things on the menu. figuring that stuff out is already a pain, plus, i never use any of it. these days when you go into a store and you say "i want a basic model, no bells or whistles, just pure basic and nothing more", they look at you as if you've come from another planet. oh my god OH MY FUCKING GOD i've now officially turned into my grandfather what the hell? that's it, i'm getting an iphone right this fucking second and something else, something with at least 79 obsolete and totally non essential extra features and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
