Org parents...tips on weaning & solids

Hi ya org parents.

I have been reading up on baby weaning at the moment.
Seems like our little guy is getting close to needing more than milk.

Do any of you have any words of wisdom on the subject.

For those who will suggest that I consult a pediatrician instead of consulting the org, I have spoken with one of our health visitors for her advice.
Here in the UK, the infants see the regular GP's for most everything and I have little faith in asking them questions about infants.
The last one that we went to said that babies do not start to teeth until they are at least 6 months old. I know that is not 100% true but I did not argue with her.

So, just thought I would ask the parents of the org if they had anything to contribute when it comes to weaning?

Thank you.

big grin

I was just going to address org mom's but then I did not want to miss out on what the dad's had to say.

My advice, do what you feel comfortable with. Read a few books, go online for a few options and go with your gut.

My Mum had me on solids at 3 weeks or something ridiculous, but that's what you did then. And what you do now will no doubt have eyes-rolling when your grandchild's getting weaned.

Your opinion is as good as anyone's.

Good advice. Sis in law gave me two books to borrow with some recipes and such.
There is so much conflicting info out there these days.

Just gotta go with instinct.
Like you said, our parents did what they believed and what they were told was right to do. We all survived, well, most of us.

I say do it for as long as you feel comfortable.

It seems like a personal choice to me. I see no harm in 3 to 4 years. Even when it is mostly for comfort what is so wrong with that? I say let him decide. But have alternatives on the ready. A sippy cup with apple juice, or some of those baby crackers my help distract often enough until he will wean on his own.

Most of the time I hear do it for at least a year, even if they are on other foods. I have been told that the WHO says 2 to 3 is fine. But you might want to call it some code name so when he asks in public no one will know what he wants.

I think much of that is the 'yuck' factor. We have been taught that boobs are primarily sexual when they are made to feed babies. To some feeding a baby seen as sexual as it is not necessary. But look at the cans of formulas. They always say "NOW WITH This" "Improved" and thus not as good as the real thing. And most of them are made from cow's milk.

I do not see why human's drink so much cow milk? It is not made for people, and many people do not handle it very well at all.

Farmers' Almanac ...

always wean when the signs are in the feet

I switched from breast to bottle around 4-6 months and by 10-12 months they both were 100% on a cup and had very little issue with missing the bottle

we started feeing homemeade mashed foods much younger then medical Dr.s say you're "supposed" to ...

there really is no set "right way" and usually you will know more by listening to yourself and your baby then outside info

yes, i have some advice. when baby birds develop an appetite, their parent birdies eat food then regurgitate it into their babies' open beaks, thereby feeding said babies.

maybe jr. will like that better than breat-feeding! thumbs up! good luck big grin

... most women breast feed until the teeth come in, but if he's not a biter I recommend going from the breast straight to the cup.

With all 3 of my kids I started them on cereal like cream of wheat @ age 3 mos if I remember correctly.

I never did what my peeps do and mix formula/cereal in the bottle :ugh: its a bad practice for what I consider a lazy mom who wants a sleepy fat kid.

I introduced pureed fruits/veggies 1st, slowly.. one type a time to see what they liked and to make sure no food allergies would present themselves.

After about a year... I introduced my kids to icecream and cake... it was all over with the careful diet plan then. They basically ate whatever I ate.

I weaned my eldest at 11 mos. when he started biting me... the second at 1.5 years and my daughter wasn't breast long, she preferred the bottle and was biting me hard at two months.

Let me just add that I am not trying to wean him from the breast. He did that himself already. He was a very hungry impatient baby so I had to start giving him formula. I would have rather breast exclusively but he decided he just wanted them for comfort, not food.
sad
So, now we are looking to wean on to solid foods to go along with his milk.

I do not know why humans depend on cows milk so much either. It is hard to find Soy or Goats milk in the stores for babies under 6 months.
The cows milk makes them all phlegmy.

You may want to do a lactose free formula like I had to with my daughter.

Thanks Painted Lady & Mach
That is what I am looking for.
I have read to do the veggie and fruit first before rice cereals. Which I am slowly doing this week. I made him carrots today, he did not seem impressed but he likes mushed bananas.
I would never add that cereal to the bottle. That does not seem right to me.
The bottle is for liquids only. He likes his cup that we have and I make sure to give him water everyday, especially right now because he has a little cold.

you can mix a bit of carrot with the bananas or really mix any veggies/fruits (as long you have determined if there are any allergies). Just because it sounds yuck to us doesn't mean he will not love it.

I think its OK for you to start him on one bowl of hot baby cereal a day.

I mixed it with my baby's milk (formula/breast milk).. I started them on the rice cereal 1st, then I moved onto the more heavy cream of wheat which they all loved! esp. if I mixed it w/ the pureed banana.

True. Thanks. I have a bunch of recipes of mixed fruits and veg. Like you said, I have to wait to make sure he does not have any issues with them separately first.

I think so too. He is 17 weeks old but was 17 days overdue and seems to still have a very large appetite and the formula alone is not cutting it.
I gave him a little rice cereal with formula mixed in to, he liked it.

I dream of the time that he goes through the night. Though I know I should not rush this time away, I am just one tired momma.

we've talked about this already but....contrary to what paintedlady thinks trying a little cereal in the bottle is NOT just for "a lazy mom who wants a sleepy fat kid" confused in your case...as you've told me he's a big hungry boy who's not too stable sitting up yet and his neck is still a little weak. So I think you could try a little cereal in the bottle. Just to introduce it to him and help satisfy his growing hunger which will help him sleep a bit longer. (that's a good thing..not a bad thing) Other than that I would start experimenting with just a lil bit of the baby cereal mixed with formula or juice or water. Even just a fraction of a spoonfull at first...see if he is repulsed by it or intrigued.
good luck! smile

oop...it seems you've already introduced him to some stuff. smile you're doing great.

Yes, we have discussed. He is doing much better sitting up now. Maybe the threat of food has encouraged him to be a big boy.
He really liked the rice milk and mushed bananas on the spoon today.

After the initial pureed foods (meats included) I would add snacks like cheerios, lorna doon biscuits, and mashed boiled plantains/yucca/sweetpotatos... but I am Rican so the diet gets all tropical. lol

My kids were sucking on mangoes @ six months. boxed

and you can do a skin spot test too! Put a dab of the food on his cheek and see if there is a reaction. (a small red rash) that will give you some indication if there is an allergy.

But that is more useful as he gets older. I saw a kid with a huge rash all over his face, he had gotten into some salad dressing. Seems he was allergic to something in the dressing.

cheerios or products made for babies that are simular. Not the store brands. Those tend to use cheaper ingredients and will be more likely to have some allergic reactions.

Someone said on the radio last week, if the product has more that 2 things other than what you would expect that item to have in it...do not eat it.

I say that because mothers IMO go overboard with that mess, shaking up thick milkshakes and splitting open the holes in the bottle just so that that thickened stuff can get through. The child just gets overfed that way.

I NEVER had to do that, and yeah, its just as easy to hold your child and spoon feed them yourself, even if the neck is weak. Just cradle them in one arm, or feed them in the bouncy chair.

To each her/his own though shrug

nod I so agree, every baby is different. My girls started rice cereal when they were about 4 months...not a thick cereal, almost like water, then we slowly worked up to applesauce when they were about 6-7 months.
