Man loses $53 million deposit on house

Billionaire loses $53 million deposit on villa

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov has to pay $53 million for a French villa he does not own.

.A court has ruled that Prokhorov must forfeit the 10 percent deposit he put down on a $527 million villa in southern France because he never completed the deal he made in July 2008 with the widow of banker Edmond Safra, according to BusinessWeek.com. Under French law, the deposit was forfeited when Russia’s second richest man -- worth an estimated $19.9 billion -- did not sign the final contract by a Dec. 15, 2008, deadline

I think that $53 million dollars is like a pinch of salt to him. Otherwise, he would have been serious enough to close the deal.

Right? In California I'd say between 8 and 12 million.

Good for the builder. Something like that almost happened to someone I know on an $800K home. He had contracted for the house and then his wife filed for a DIVORCE. So had to bribe his wife to get the Divorce finalized in short order so he could finalize the deal and not lost the $80K deposit. I told him that he should get out of the deal becasue the builder was late (due to a hurricane) and there was no clause in the contract to allow for such delay. But as luck had it the Divorce was finalized with a few weeks to spare so he bought the house and then sold it for $1.1 Million making a sweet $300K profit.

That's scary. Should fans and staff be worried?
