Once upon a time in America I dont think this film won any oscars? Infact, I don't think it was even nominated because the US release was F***ed up by cutting the film considerably as it was deemed too long (at least Europe saw it in its original state). Still, at least the DVD is of the full cut, but its a crime (LOL) this film is not regarded by the public in general with "The Godfather" as one of the best gangster movies of all time. Its more sombre and laid back then most of those kinda flicks, but its gorgeous to look at though and Deniro as you'd expect, is great as is James Woods. Pretty much every person I have given my DVD to, said they loved it but had never heard of it. As with Sergio's earlier Spaghetti Westerns, Ennio Morricone's score is wonderful and is so different to his earlier work. Fantastic film.

this is one of my favorite movies in that it gave the viewers a look at the tough life through the eyes of a group of young jewish ghetto youths who rise to prominence in New York City's world of organized crime. it was released in 1984.
robert deniro does an excellent portrayal of david "noodles" aaronson, in that he plays this character as a young twenty something and the does a complete metamorphisis by gaining a considerable amount of weight to play the same character as an aging 50 something years. true it is a long movie and demands full attention as not get lost in the plot's direction. i've watched it more than once. imo it's a great movie and deserved more accolades from the then hollywood movers and shakers. Live life as though each moment is as precious & beautiful as a rainbow after a spring rain. b positive, creative, kind, productive, resourceful & respectful of humankind, & feel free 2 know that U-R-A . i can feel it when u shine on me

Yes, this movie is the Sh*t! It was just on TV last night. Go ahead and buy the DVD, it's worth it. Plus, I love the theme (music). Another good gangster movie is Miller's Crossing.

There was supposed to have been some plot problems, not that I recall them, but the cinematography and general atmostphere of it is incredible. The sort of film to get lost in for an evening.

Great great movie. The movie didn't do well also because of limited thearte release in the States. The studios hatchet job on Sergio's film was an abomination.

When I see it come on television I never get to see the whole thing, then I wonder what parts did they cut for the "made for tv" version. I hate when they do that. I'm going to search for the dvd this weekend. I'm an avid fan of organized crime movies. "The Godfather" is my #1 favorite movie of all time. And not for it's violence either, it's more about the strategic moves that both Vito and Michael Corleone made in order to keep their "family" ahead of the rest. Watching the movie is like a stress reliever for me. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

It´s one of my favorite movies, too, but more so because of how it depicts the rise and fall of a family, the tragedies, the personal loss and drama and how someone like Michael Corleone has to change his character and bear so much responsibility and how the burden on his shoulders becomes heavier and heavier. Sometimes, the TV versions are even more interesting than the cinematic releases. Did you know that there´s a TV version of The Godfather ? It´s called The Godfather-The Saga, and there are a couple of added scenes in it and the ending is a bit different, with Michael´s wife lighting a few candles in a church. The chronology is different though, it is a different timeline and not like the movie and I found that a bit confusing at first...still highly watchable though. Very long. The chronology is different though, it is a different timeline and not like the movie and I found that a bit confusing at first...still highly watchable though. Very long. Totally agree. I'm very fascinated with how at first Michael was so much against "the family business" and did nearly everything in his power to rebel against his father to let him know that he was not by any means going to be involved with it. But it wasn't until he realized that he wasn't going to have his father messed with by anyone that he totally changed. If you look at the scene when Michael reads the newspaper that Vito has been shot and "feared murdered", his whole personality changed from "anti-mafioso" to "ruthless avenger" in those few seconds. I could talk all day long about "The Godfather" for real. Oh yes my dear, I'm very familiar with "The Godfather Saga". When I bought "The Godfather" DVD collection that was released in 2001, it featured all of the deleted or lost scenes from all three Godfather movies which included the "extra" scenes shown in the "Saga" version. But there is still no dvd that exists featuring the "Godfather Saga" version including most of the "extra" scenes in with the movie....I wish there was though. Who knows? If we are lucky, that maybe coming sometime in the future. I have to say though, if you watch the "extra" scenes on the bonus DVD from the 2001 collection, it does make the movie a bit more interesting. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I've never seen the US re-cut. Apparantly its quite rare now, not that I want to see it mind you I love "godfather 1 and 2", but honestly, this is just as good in some ways. Its slow, but its quite beautiful aswell.
