Thank you all for your words and support. A big part of me feels dissasociated from the events happening 6,000 miles away. Then the other part of me feels guilty for that and wants to jump on a plane, (which is not possible work-wise, money-wise, and I don't even have a passport right now). Calling my mom tonite to check up on things. [Edited 2/27/10 13:47pm] By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

She was admitted a few days ago and has been in & out with all sorts of things (severe incontinence, fluid in the lungs, blood pressure, you name it). They're really scared that this is the beginning of the end...but I'm maintaining a positive mindset and hoping that she pulls through and recovers 100%. My paternal grandmother passed away about 10 years ago and I hadn't seen her since 1982. It still weighs on me that I never made an extra effort to save $$$ to fly down and see her before she died. My grandma Tina, however, traveled more freequently and she was here in NY as recently as 6 years ago. I spoke with her at Christmas and she was hoping to make another trip to NY. I would love to fly down with the wife & kids, but that's a $5K trip that I just can't afford right now. Anyway...keep my abuelita in your prayers if you can. can you fly by yourself? My grandma (in her mid 90s) has now had whooping cough TWICE and recovered fully both times. She has also been battling glaucoma and depression but lately says she hasn't been happier, so don't rule a recovery out!

When I was a child I used to visit Honduras frequently. However the last time I went there I was 11 years old (1982), so making a trip is a pretty big deal. I'd need to make provisions to visit a boatload of family (aunts, uncles, etc.) and I wouldn't be able to go empty-handed either. I've been planning on going with the family in another 2 or 3 years. Since I posted, my OTHER grandma who is 100, fell in her kitchen and cracked her hip. It looks like this is the end of independent assistance free living is over for her I'm flying over, but not until June - I'd already bought my tickets back in January.

I've once had a landlord who has family in Belize, and she said it's expensive. Anyway, hang in there and wish you all the best.

Thank you again for all your words of kindness & support.
I tried calling last night but couldn't connect (horrible phone service down there...or need a better calling card). Mom is flying back on Saturday though, so I assume that abuelita is on the road to recovery. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!
