I used to get mine done and I never will again. They were so painfully thin when I decided to take them off. It hurt just to put them under running water. Took forever for them to be strong again.

I don't really understand why someone with nails that were strong in the first place would get acrylics.

Trust me...the only reason I get mine done is because I have shit for nails. If mine were good, I'd leave 'em alone.

First and foremost, I'm shocked that you payed over $45... that worries me in itself, that the shop is trying to fuck you over. Most places charge $25 for a new, full set. Esecially if they are short. A new full set for me, with them being long, a $10 design, and an overlay only comes up to $40... otherwise it would've been $25.

I've never had a problem with my acrylics (which are long), getting my nails discoloured. Sometimes, after weeks with repeated fill-ins, the acrylic itself can stain to a yellow-ish tint, because it's old. Time to rip them suckers off and get a new, clean full set.

If your ACTUAL nail is discolouring, I would remove the nails. That could be a fungal infection. When you have a fungus, the nails should be removed immediately because they acrylic/gel/silk/whatever makes it so that air cannot circulate on your natural nail.

When they file your natural nail down to adhear the acrylic, they should ALWAYS use a clean file adapter... it doesn't necessarily have to be a NEW one, but they should ALWAYS steralize them after each customer; especially the certain one that touches your actual nail, and not just the acrylic.

I prefer acrylic over gel -- gel breaks EASILY. If you give your nails a dirty look, the fucking thing snaps; I've had them done at different salons over the years, and even at the current one that I go to (I got to a very good salon, so, I know it's not the service). I opt for a good quality acrylic, and then to keep my design looking new and nice, I get what's called a gel overlay. They put a thin layer of gel over the painted acrylic, and pop it under the UV light to dry it. It keeps it looks nicer longer. No clipped polish.

Just a personal note: NEVER get your nails done in a mall. Please. Just don't. I've heard too many horror stories from friends who have WORKED in mall salons. You should always go in and talk to your nail technician BEFORE they do any work; find out about sterilization processes, price lists, etc. Also always check references.

Hope that helped. batting eyes

wow $25 is good, that would be about 30 bux australian but still really good.

speaking of the overlay she said that is what i needed on my nails? cause of the discoloration? but it has only been 3 weeks.

the uv light thing is what i put my hands under after the acrylic- but after i notices it wasn't dry properly cause i got something outta my bag. and it make a mark.

I'm not sure it is the actual nail but between the acrylic tip and my pink part of my nail there are yellow parts.

yea I don't think the place was hygenic- i looked yesterday and files etc everywhere- drill bits didn't look clean etc.

yea will never do it again. but how do u know if someone is good or not. i don't know people who do this to ask.

thanks hun 4 the help

Oh, okay. I was confused by your statement that it took time for them to become strong again.

don't go back to that place...you got ripped off.

you would only get that fungis if the instruments used were not clean and if the nails and fill were not properly applied. the fungis often comes from trapped water under the nail or transferred from unclean nail tools.

also, acrylic is not good as it doesn't last very long. fiberglass is better and should last you a good 3 nearly 4 weeks versus 2 weeks with acrylic.

45 bucks for just your hands and acrylic at that is wayyy over priced. it should have only cost you 20-25.

also, if your're going to wear the fake nails you should consider taking a break every couple months as your own nail will become very thin and weak underneath.

fake nails should be viewed as an accessory and not a long term committment like say...hair coloring.

An overlay will not prevent discoloration of the acrylic itself; but that shouldn't occur ANYWAY until weeks of repeated fill-ins. And by that time, you're gonna want to get a new full set anyway. The discoloration shows that the acrylic is old.

You may have gotten an overlay of gel if they dried it under a UV-light; did they rinse your acrylics with alcohol afterwards? If not, there was no overlay, and they were just drying them under the lights for some retarded reason.

From the way you described it, that definately sounds like a fungal infection... I would get them removed as soon as possible; and any good salon has antibacterial gels and ointments they will apply after they take your nails off.

If you don't know any references as to whether a salon is good or not, talk to the workers, the owner, etc. Talk to people who are sitting, waiting to get their nails done. Don't be afraid to ask questions about hygene, about sterilization, etc. It's more important to worry about the health of your nails, that to worry about if you look dumb asking, lol.

when you get your nails done there will be two types of powder (acrylic and fiberglass). the fiberglass is good for those who don't like the weight of artificial nails and the polish tends to adhere better. they are also easier to file if you feel like changing the shape of your nail in between salon visits. If you wash your hands a lot (and I mean ALOT) then don't go for the fiberglass.

Personally I like the gel but I tend to do french manicure and the gel can mess up the color of polish if you're doing something other than white, pink or beige.

If it was no alcohol rinse, then you didn't have any sort of gel, and they're idiots for putting you under a UV. rolleyes

No, the nail polish remover that you buy over the counter is not pure acetone. Pure acetone is what will melt the acrylic. You have two options. One, you could try to pry the fuckers off with nail clippers (which, I've done -- not recommended, and it hurts like a mother bitch), or you could go to a different salon, and usually it costs $10 to get them soaked off. If you try to purchase pure acetone from a beauty wholesaler, and attempt to soak them yourself, you're going to be in one REALLY BIG STICKY MESS. Just don't do it!
