It's not common but it's not that uncommon either.
If it weren't snowing, it would be raining, so where would you go then? I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

We get thunder & lightning sometimes when we get really bad blizzards here. Last time I recall it happening was almost two years ago. We ended up getting over a foot of snow. Facebook, I haz it - https://www.facebook.com/Nikster1969

Thundersnow is my most favoritest thing in the whole world!
The same thing that causes thunder in a rainstorm causes thunder in a snowstorm - vertical development (convection) in a storm cell. To get vertical development, you need colder air overlying a warmer layer, plus a lifting mechanism (a front, a jet stream or both). In winter, the air tends to be uniformly cold and the jet stream tends to be farther south than the typical northern hemisphere storm track. Occasionally, however, everything lines up atmospherically and you get thundersnow! We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I was listening to the news earlier, and they mentioned the possibility of thunder and lightning here (NYC/NJ) this evening with the heavy snow we're experiencing. They even made a reference to Chicago! "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Being from Oklahoma where weather is the most random and weird as anywhere in the world...Yes I've seen that during snow. I remember it quite well. It was the winter of 1994. I left work early because the whole damn city was closing down with this horrible snow storm that was coming down. Throughout the whole day, there was thunder. In all my years of living in Oklahoma, it was the first time I had ever seen that. There was lightning reported in some areas as well.

;hah: I thought I was losing my mind last night. I heard the thunder. I didn't see the lightning. I thought it was about to be 'quake part two up in here. I remember hearing thunder during the Winter a looong time ago when I was about 10 or 11. My gramma didn't believe me and said it was a freight truck hitting a pothole.
