They were good, but...
http://www.facebook.com/t...opic=14267 The Sprite Step Off was initially created as a way to recognize talented college students and give out scholarships to help support their higher education. If we put on some entertaining step shows and brought people together along the way, all the better. After the National Finals Competition this past weekend in Atlanta wrapped, we got together to do our post-competition review and found a scoring discrepancy in the sorority results. After looking at it and looking at it AGAIN, we determined there isn’t a definitive resolution. Sprite is all about preserving the honesty and integrity of this competition. Because the scoring discrepancy can’t be resolved and due to the really tight margin between the first and second place sorors, we feel that the only right thing to do is to name both Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tau Chapter & Zeta Tau Alpha, Epsilon Chapter, co-first place winners of the Sprite Step Off. With these revised results, we’re gonna increase Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tau Chapter’s scholarship prize to $100K, consistent with what Zeta Tau Alpha also got for their first prize winnings. Thanks again to everyone who helped make The Sprite Step Off happen. And to one last stroll in the name of unity... And... http://www.thehilltoponli...-1.2163798 I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

And... http://www.thehilltoponli...-1.2163798 So Sprite admits to a "discrepancy" and some audience members are calling shenanigans on MTV. Don't know why, it's not like they would manipulate a situation for more attention. Like I already said, white sororities/fraternities have BEEN novelty acts at step shows for ages, and often garner a lot of audience support, regardless of skill level, just for being there, but they are not typically competing because as the article stated they aren't part of the "Divine Nine." Without seeing the other groups I can't say who was better, BUT it is conceivable that the audience responded the way they did in part cuz they were white and thinking they were a novelty act. Oh and FUCK this co-first place BULLSHIT! I ain't NEVAH heard of such a thing. The ONLY solution is a stepoff. The fact that they're doing this co-first place mess tells me that the AKAs won by the judges but because of all the publicity they gotta keep the Zetas in first place too. I'm calling bullshit on this right herre. [Edited 2/25/10 6:34am]

I'm calling bullshit on this right herre. EVERYTHING about Whites stepping is novelty for reasons you already mentioned. I mean, I’ve been cracking up by the responses here on this thread alone. Amateurs (meaning people not in a Black frat or sorority ) have no idea what they’re doing or looking at, the meaning behind the steps being performed, or what’s creative or original. That’s not a diss, it’s just fact. There was NOTHING original, creative, or impressive about ZTA’s actual show other than they’re White. Not the theme, the table, the moves, the stroll. Nothing. That doesn’t mean they didn’t execute it well, but still. They’re a White sorority that was taught about stepping by some AKAs. If WGLO’s wanna step then but don’t mimic what the BGLOs do. The meaning is not the same, plus you might get you ass whooped for stealing. This shit has been going on since Was blasphemously deduced to this I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

For example? I'm not saying I totally disagree with what's been said, but... Right or wrong, for better or worse, if this were a thread about something known for/dominated by white folk...I dunno, a black or hispanic dude winning a country-ass music competition or some shit, and someone made a comment saying that a person of color performing that task was just "novelty", there would be some wig-snatchin goin on.

I don't know why, that's what they are. It's not about domination, it's about DEFINITION. White step teams are RARELY part of the competition because by definition they are not one of the "Divine Nine" black organizations which is typically an understood requirement. If you're talking about just a step competition where any step team can compete, that's one thing. But if you're talking about a step show specifically for black Greeks, which is what I'm talking about, the white groups are a novelty act like an intermission in the competition. And MOST audience members know that. That wasn't the case here but that could easily have been some audience members' perception because, historically that's been their role in step shows. And like I said, the white steppers always got extra crowd support just for being there, regardless of how good they were. Regardless, Sprite now coming out saying there was a "discrepancy" is some bullshit. Because if the discrepancy warranted the AKAs being co-winners DAYS later that tells me that the discrepancy was actually in THEIR favor but they didn't want to take it away from the Zetas because of all the publicity. Otherwise, if the error still resulted in the Zetas coming out ahead there would be no need to make the AKA co-winners cuz the Zetas woulda still won. In my 20 years of going to shows, I've NEVER seen this happen. There would be a stepoff which actually happened in THIS competition to determine the 3rd place fraternity. So why the new exception for the FIRST place sorority??? Are they splitting the $100k too??? SSDD "Stroll in the name of unity" my ass. Fuckas prolly don't even know what a stroll is.

You can sit over there with no real understanding of the context and what it means and point your finger at those who are actually a part of this and judge without any real knowledge of the situation or protocol.
